Paul Vidal de La Blache, (1845-1918), French geographer who had a profound influence on the development of modern geography. Vidal's life study of the interrelations of people's activities and their physical environment made him the founder of French human geography. He held that the role of people is not passive, since within limits they can modify their environment to advance their own ends. Many of Vidal's papers were collected in Principes de géographie humaine, 1922. Owner's ex libris plate on front pastedown and imbossed stamp with owner's name on prelim. Light edge wear with age-toned prelims and textblock edges. Clean, tight and strong binding with no underlining, highlighting or marginalia. Maroon half-leather with marble paper-covered boards, raised bands with gilt lettering to spine, and decorative endpapers..
