A nicely rebacked first bound edition with fifty bright hand-colored lithographic plates. This copy that of the famous Philadelphia Quaker philanthropist Anna T. Jeanes with her signature to title. ; 4to 11" - 13" tall; viii, 288 pages.

Engraving with etching, aquatint and hand-coloring on 1836 watermarked J. Whatman hand-made paper. Unusually wide, untrimmed margins showing the pulls from the binder's signatures on the left margin and the gilt to the top edge. "I closed my eyes, and was passing away into the world of dreaming existence, when suddenly there burst on my soul the serenade of the Rose-breasted bird, so rich, so mellow, so loud in the stillness of the night, that sleep fled from my eyelids. Full green cloth with gilt particulars to front cover and spine. Inscribed by the author in pencil to title page dated 1871 signed "by the author". Complete with 15 plates by Frank Bott. Minor spotting to first few pages and wear to corners (see image). Clean copy with no previous owners' names or defacements.
