First visual and sound retrospective of the postal art network,
considered as its highest moment.
Aeropus I is a Mail Art project initiated by Guy Schraenen.
This collective sound composition, consisting of 176 contributions, was performed for the first time with a slide and video projection on October 3, 1981, at the international Cultureel Centrum in Antwerp during the International Mail Art Festival in 1981 and was performed by Niels Lomholt, Huub Ten Hacken and Frances-Marie Uitti.
Among those 176 contributors are : Ben, Julien Blaine, Ulises Carrion, Ko de Jong, H. de Vries, N. Frangione, Pavel Petasz, Pierre Restany, A. Spatola, Timm Ulrich, E. A. Vigo…
Thanks to the network of artists and activists which grew from mid of the 1960s along with the development of formats which were easy to disseminate, a new means of circulation was born. This postal art movement enabled the exchange of concepts and works across political and ideological borders. It played a crucial role in allowing artists to develop independent narratives which differed from the dominant ones given by the art market, art historians and art critics. In totalitarian political situations, it was a possibility to express non-permitted positions. Thanks to his active participation, Guy Schraenen exchanged his artists' publications with more than 1000 artists from almost 50 countries.

The plates were drawn by Giovanni Battista Cipriani and stipple engraved by Francesco Bartolozzi.The images record a selection of the carved gemstones in the collection of George Spencer, 4th Duke of Marlborough. The cameos and intaglios show portraits of Roman emperors, Greek philosophers, gods and goddesses from Greek and Roman mythology. Complete with 509 hand-coloured copperplates engraved by Charles Mathews after botanical illustrations by Mathews, Isaac Russel (an Oxford glass painter) and William Alfred Delamotte. The plates were reputedly hand-coloured by Baxter's daughters and daughter-in-law.
