Hanoviae: Impensis Andreae Wecheli heredum, Claudii Marnii, et Ioannis Aubrii, 1596. [Latin Bible] THIRD THUS. Folio in sixes (35 x 23cm), pp.[12] 177 [1]; [6] 292 numbered leaves [2]; 74 numbered leaves [2]; [2] 448 [16]. In a nineteenth century full brown calf binding, recently re-backed with the original spine leather laid over, including the original title label. With the original nineteenth century marbled endpapers. All edges trimmed and tinted red, likely contemporary with the nineteenth century binding. Title page heavily worn with some losses to margins; backed onto blank leaf, with a small partially obscured black ink ownership to top right. Large marginal water stains up to about p.100 of the first section. An internal tear to margin of p.97/98 of the first section. A stain to Ii1; stains to Mm1 and 2. Verso of Bbbbb4 badly printed. Small tears to N6, p.156 of the New Testament. Marginal stains again from p.400 of the New Testament to end. Heavy damage and large losses to final three leaves of the index. Heavy wear and bumping to binding, restored to a robust and attractive condition. Good. Immanuel Tremellius was born Jewish, but converted to Catholicism in 1540 and quickly became a Protestant, teaching Hebrew at Universities in Italy, Germany and England. He first published a polyglot New Testament in 1569 at Geneva (Darlow and Moule 1421), and later published a complete Old Testament in Latin with his son-in-law Franciscus Junius between 1575 and 1579 (Darlow and Moule 6165). This translation was joined with his New Testament in 1579/80 and printed in London, making his edition the first complete Latin Bible to be printed in England (Darlow and Moule 6166). Theodore Beza's Latin translation of the New Testament from the original Greek was supplemented to this edition in 1585 (Darlow and Moule 6175), and a new revised edition was published at Hanau in 1590 (Darlow and Moule 6182). With a reprint of the Hanau edition appearing in London in 1593 (Darlow and Moule 6185), this book is essentially the third printing of the second edition of Tremellius, Junius and Beza's Latin Bible, although some additional revisions by Junius are claimed. Darlow and Moule, 'Historical Catalogue of the Printed Editions of Holy Scripture' (London: 1903-1911) 6187.
