About This Item
NY: Dutton, 1955. 1st US Edition. Hardcover. Very Good +/Very Good -. Stated fourth printing - on copyright page and front flap of dustjacket - of the first American edition. Inscribed in English by the French Sagan on the ffe: "To Jane Putnam/ thanks for the party,/ and your welcome/ with very best wishes/ Francoise Sagan'. Signed copies of Sagan's book, particularly this her first book, are uncommon. The inscribee we believe to be a NY socialite to whom Sagan thanks for a party, perhaps on her publicity tour for this book, which was quite a sensation - Sagan's first novel at the age of 19 - with four printings in its first two months of publication, February-March 1955. Red cloth covers bit soiled as is the dustjacket which has some edgewear and is missing a pencil-eraser-tip sized piece head of spine.
Synopsis
Bonjour Tristesse (in English, Hello Sadness) is a novel by Françoise Sagan. Published in 1954, when the author was only eighteen, it caused an overnight sensation. The title is derived from a poem by Paul Éluard, "À peine défigurée," which begins with the lines "Adieu tristesse/ Bonjour tristesse... " The 1958 film Bonjour Tristesse featured Geoffrey Horne, Deborah Kerr, Jean Seberg and David Niven as the lead actors. The music was composed by Georges Auric.
