About This Item

Tokyo: Asahi Photo Service, 1934. en Francais - Image du Japon Second Edition; 1934. Bilingual English/French book with French translations by Georges Alsot 4to size tan clothbound hardcover with black titles on spine and cover; 292 pages. Endpapers are a two page spread of a red Rising Sun on a light colored background. Most pages are full page black and white photographs, there are some pages where two photographs appear on a single page. The photographs are very high quality reproductions. The photographs are captioned in English and French. The book has no Table of Contents and no text other than the photo captions and Preface. From Preface: "(Our) cameramen are constantly exploring the multi-colored life of the people, and their photographs offer fresh sidelights upon Japanese customers and activities, which will afford Western readers glimpses into an unfamiliar Eastern world... (It shows) something of the recent developments, both social and political, that go to make up modern progress in Japan." This is an interesting photographic depiction of pre-World War II Japan and includes a depiction and transition from traditional clothing and hair styles to Western styles of dress. Industry, food production and the scenic beauty of the land are among the subjects represented. The book has edgewear and bumped corners. The covers have some mottling which is likely the result of past insect damage. Previous owner's information in written inside front cover. Inside covers and endpapers have some light tanning or discoloration. We noted one creased page tip and a smudge in the margin of page 81. . 2nd. Cloth. Good/No Jacket. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.
