Rare first printing of the Justinian Codex.

Justinian Codex in Three Volumes

The Code of Justinian (Codex Justinianus) is a part of the Corpus Juris Civilis, the codification of Roman law ordered early in the 6th century CE by Justinian I, the Byzantine emperor. During his reign two parts were compiled, the Digestum and the Institutes. Posthumously the works named Novellae Constitutiones were compiled and are also considered a part of the Corpus Juris Civilis.

Binding: Original Vellum binding. Wormholes, vellum on all panels damaged, sections missing with tears. Vellum cracked in a few places, requiring restoration.

Condition: Wormholes within the textblock. Minor stains due to moisture within the textblock. Signs of aging, occasional moisture stains within the textblock, text legibility not affected.

Note:
It is possible to repair the binding on the request of the buyer, we will cover the reparation expenses with our resident bookbinder.
It is uncommonly rare to find more than one of the Lyon prints of the editions sold together, they are usually sold separately.

Mid 18th century Church history written in Latin. Author of the study is Johann Lorenz von Mosheim, German Lutheran church historian. His first appearance in the field of literature was in a polemical tract against John Toland. This work is titled "Vindiciae antiquae christianorum disciplinae" and it was published in 1720. Year later a volume of "Observationes sacrae" followed it. These works secured for him a call to the University of Helmstedt. There he gained a title "professor ordinarius" in 1723. The "Institutionum historiae ecclesiasticae libri IV" appeared in 1726. In the same year, he was appointed by the duke of Brunswick abbot of Marienthal. This is one of the more important works regarding church history in Luteranism.

A rare and beautiful copy of Orthodox Evangelion with luxury purple velvet binding with brass clasps and corner and center ornaments. Woodcut printed text and hand-colored illustrations. The book contains multiple hand inscriptions that are only partially legible.The pencil inscription on the front flyleaf contains references to Sarajevo, Bosnia, and Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria, as well as the years: 1911 and 1914. It is possible that the text in some way refers to the Bosnian crisis which served as a prelude to WWI. But, since we have not been able to translate the entire text, we cannot be certain of the context. Rare original poetry book with cloth covered boards, copyright 1880 by J. W. Shoemaker & Co. This edition published in 1906 by the Penn Publishing company, Philadelphia. From the estate of my great-great grandfather.Includes many unique poems and recitations such as "To a skull", "Uncle Daniel's Introduction to a Mississippi Steamer", "The Leak in the Dyke", etc. More well-known poetry includes "Song of Birds", "Old Ironsides", and "Bannock Burn" by Robbie Burns. Light rubbing and bumps to outside spine edges. Back cover and interior cloth covered board has a stain at top. Original owner's name and address from 1908, but no other writing or marks. First 2 pages have a stain at top, but text of 192 pages of poetry and recitations is totally clean with light tanning of pages.
