Washington DC : M. St. Clair Clarke and Peter Force, [ 1833 ], 1837 - 1846. First Edition. Broadside, printed on translucent tracing paper, one crease not by the binder, half-inch tear at tab.
In 1820, when the Declaration of Independence was already showing signs of age and deterioriation, Secretary of State John Q. Adams commissioned printer William J. Stone to make a full-size copperplate engraving of the original. This plate was used to print 201 copies of the Declaration on parchment. Presidents Jefferson, Adams, Monroe and Madison each received one. That 1823 Stone engraving is the iconic form recognized by most Americans. In 1833, Stone supplied a second issue, estimated at 500 copies of the Declaration pulled from Stone's original engraved copperplate, which were inserted into Book 1 of the Fifth Series of AMERICAN ARCHIVES. (Measures approx. 28.5 x 25.5 inches). "Stone's facsimile is as close to an exact copy of the original manuscript as was humanly possible at that time. ... Stone's engraving remains the best representation of the engrossed Declaration manuscript as it looked in 1776, " - Seth Kaller, AMERICA'S TREASURE. Furthermore, the Stone engraving codified the best text of this immortal document. [Bidwell 7 note]. "The William J. Stone engravings ... initiated the second life of the Declaration, which begins to thrive not just as a text but as a visual icon, recognizable at a glance -- by now, hardly less recognizable than the American flag." - Prof. Bill Brown. [ PRINTING AND THE MIND OF MAN, 220; Grolier, 100 AMERICAN BOOKS, 15; Evans 42773; Sabin 25053; Howes F245 ].
