New York: The International Monthly, 1915. Magazine. Seven issues of the staplebound magazine, 16p. per issue, first issue toned across the top, otherwise generally very good with minor creasing or edgewear. Issues present are nos. 14-16, 24, 25, and vol. 2 nos. 1 and 2. Viereck, who had made a splash as a poet in the previous decade, used his reputation (and his personal connections with figures in the German government) to present the German side to an American audience after the outbreak of WWI. The most successful pro-German publication of this period, the magazine included contributors such as Aleister Crowley, Frank Harris, H.H. Ewers, and others. As the war continued, and Viereck was seen less as a conduit of useful perspectives than as a propagandist, the magazine's fortunes changed, especially after the entry of the US into the war. After gaining this infamy as a pro-German propagandist in WWI, Viereck went on to serve a prison term in WWII for his actions as a Nazi agent. Renewed attention has been drawn to Viereck by Rachel Maddow in her 2022 podcast "Ultra," about pro-Nazi propagandists in the period leading up to WWII; she discusses how several US Congressmen worked with Viereck to disseminate Nazi propaganda through isolationist channels.
