Ira Frederick Aldridge (1807 â€" 1867) was an American-born British actor, playwright, and theatre manager, known for his portrayal of Shakespearean characters he regarded as the one of the first Black American tragedians As his career grew, his performances of Shakespeare's classics met with critical acclaim and he eventually became the manager of Coventry's Theatre Royal He regularly toured much of Continental Europe and received top honors from several heads of state He died suddenly while on tour in Poland and is buried in Łódź He is the only actor of Black-American descent honored with a bronze plaque at the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon

This is a near fine copy in black cloth with gilt titles on spine Slight foxing on endpapers but otherwise in excellent condition with no marks or damage at all

The author Herbert Marshall (1890-1966), was a respected stage, screen and radio actor himself, who starred in many popular and well-regarded Hollywood films in the 1930s and 1940s, initially as an in-demand Hollywood leading man and later as a character actor 355 pp.
