About This Item

Bogota, Columbia: Ediciones, S. L. B., 1955. First edition of the author's first book. Cover by Cecilia Porras, 137, [5] pp. Stapled in printed self-wrappers with moderate wear and chipping to tips of spine, bit of wear and soiling to extremities, ink scribble on front cover, bookseller's stamp to back cover crossed out in ink, ownership initials to front blank, ownership signature and date to title page, and text evenly tanned. Very good copy of this book. First edition of the author's first book. Cover by Cecilia Porras, 137, [5] pp. The colophon states a printing size of 4000, but the publisher's finances made it such that they could only retrieve copies as they were paid for, so most copies are assumed to have been left there, either pulped or lost. García Márquez himself stated that, prior to One Hundred Years of Solitude, no more than 700 copies of his books were sold, and that this was the case here. In this period in Colombia, it would've been highly unlikely for a relatively unknown author to print more than 1000 copies of a work, and that the number 4000 was more likely an ideal, or a marketing technique. Synopsis
