It is no understatement to say that this is one of the most important books to have been printed. This is the FIRST EDITION, SECOND ISSUE of the 1611 King James Translation of the Bible, otherwise known as the Authorized Version, or the Great 'She' Bible. This scarce volume is bound in antiquarian calf, being a rebind of the last 200 years. There are numerous leaves missing, so I will provide a detailed collation below. We have referred to Francis Fry's works on the Great Bibles to identify the edition, taking particular notes of the woodcut initials, paper stock and spacing of type to verify the edition. EDITION INFORMATION AND COLLATION: This is Fry's First Edition, Second Issue of the Authorized Version. In this issue, the first title page was dated 1613, whilst the title page to the New Testament was dated 1611. OLD TESTAMENT: This book lacks all before signature Qq2, commencing on I Chronicles Chap 26 Verse 24. The first full verse is Chap 26 Verse 25. The leaf that follows (signature Qq3) lacks approx a fifth of the leaf, along the outer edge, affecting text. Thereafter the text runs complete throughout the following: II Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther, Job, Psalmes, Proverbes, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel, Daniel, Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habbakuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi. The APOCRYPHA, comprises: I Esdras, II Esdras, Tobit, Judeth, The Rest of Esther, The Wisedom of Solomon, Ecclesiasticus, Baruch, Song of Three Holy Children, Susanna, Bel and the Dragon, Prayer of Manasses, I Maccabees, II Maccabees. NEW TESTAMENT: Lacks NT Title Page. There follows, complete: Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Actes, Romanes, I Corinthians, II Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, I Thessalonians, II Thessalonians, I Timothie, II Timothie, Titus, Philemon, Hebrewes, James, I Peter, II Peter, I John, II John, III John, Jude. The book finishes on leaf one of Revelation, ie: Chapter II Verse 20, a residue of the next leaf is in situ. Prints from the British Library microfilm archive are supplied for OT title page (1611 first issue title engraved by Boel) and NT Title page. Microfilm prints are also present for the remainder of Revelation, though missing the leaf containing Chap XIIII. CONDITION: Generally clean and tidy, with whole pages - with a few exceptions. Towards the end, some creasing to pages, occasional darkening due to damp. There is a 5mm wormhole to the text in the early part of the OT over a hundred or so leaves. Signature Kkk lacks the lower outer corner, approx 18cm x 10cm, with a closed tear along its width. Verso signature Nnn2 and recto Nnn3 have a small black paint/ink mark, slightly affecting text. Loss of margin to Rrr2. Worming to signature Rrr3. Fraying to Dddd3 at bottom outer corner. Damage to print surface of Pppp3. Minor loss of text at bottom corner of N2 of the NT, loss to margins of NT X2, X3, Z2. No maps present. VALUATION: This is substantially more complete than other fragments offered online and compares well on cost. Some dealers are asking between 100 and 500 GBP for a single leaf, others are offering single Books from the NT or OT for 2,000-3,000 GBP. I offer this as is, hoping it will be saved for a good home, rather than be broken up. If the book is married with the first half of the OT, it will be substantially complete, with only Revelation missing. This will make a great project for a genuine collector and lover of bibles, who can make up the whole book for a knockdown price.
