4° (mm 210x150); ll. (12), 130. Title in Gothic type, text in Roman. Splendid large woodcut on the title page; 90 small woodcuts (sometimes repeated) in the text, some of which are of remarkable quality. Later full vellum. A few quires with light browning, but a very nice, unsophisticated copy.

Exceedingly rare illustrated edition.

Edizione rarissima.

The Tavola ritonda and the Tristano Riccardiano are not the only Italian rewritings of Arthurian texts. The adventures of Merlin also inspired the authors of the Peninsula and it is here that the two narrative traditions relating to this character merge for the first time: the story of his life (the Estoire de Merlin from the Lancelot-Graal cycle) and his Prophecies (in a version elaborated in Veneto around 1272-1279, very different from the one by Geoffrey of Monmouth that appeared from 1134).

The Historia di Merlino in six books (Vita and Prophetie), resulting from this rapprochement, is nonetheless a new work, rich of many original features
. It is known to us by some late manuscripts and a Venetian incunable of 1480, several times reprinted under the title of Vita de Merlino. This rare edition, beautifully illustrated, has been attributed to the typographer Manfredo Bonelli.

The colophon of 1480, still included in subsequent prints, gives interesting philological informations, but difficult to interpret: the printed text was taken from a manuscript translated from French, dated November 20, 1379 and belonging to the Venetian humanist Pietro Dolfin (1427-1506), son of "Zorzi"; this last clarification, wrongly interpreted, authorized the attribution of the translation to this Zorzi. Anyhow, this work was very successful in Italy until the middle of the sixteenth century and directly inspired in France La Vie et les prophéties de Merlin published by Antoine Vérard in 1498.

Dai cicli medievali all'Ariosto, Roma 2000, pp. 36-37).

Very rare edition of the earlier Spanish sentimental romance, originally published in Valencia in 1513.
About the authorship of Qüestión de amor, one of the most intriguing among the Spanish sentimental romances:
"In a series of articles on the authorship of the earlier sentimental romance Qüestión de amor, I suggested first that the anonymous author was a member of the aristocratic Cardona family (1994a) basing this attribution on a series of clues deeply imbedded within the text itself – in other words, evidence interior to the work. Furthermore, I suggested that the author was the poet Alonso de Cardona whose work was found in the Cancionero General of 1511 (1994b and 2006). Finally,… Read More
