(2d, Revised) New Foreword by author. Black cloth, ornate bright orange illustration embossed and set in front--the Eye of Sauron? 423 pages plus large, fold-out map on heavier paper, gilt fine on spine. DJ is heavy paper in orange, black and green. DJ has very slight wear to places along both bookfold edges, tip to tip, very tiny tear at bottom front edge at middle, five very tiny nicks with slight wear at spine top edge, two tiny tears along front spine indentation nearer middle, spine very slightly faded, tiny but whide tear at spine bottom right edge, light wear on long spine left edge near middle, Near Good DJ/Fine book. Second Part: The Two Towers. (2d, revised) Black cloth same illustration set in top front, but red rather than orange, with some gilt, gilt near fine on spine, 352 pages with large fold-out map at end, bookplate in (all three) first front end paper. DJ heavy paper in orange, black and green. DJ has very slight wear to tips, light wear and micronick along bottom front edge, microtear and tiny but wide tear at spine top left and right edge, light wear between, slight wear at spine bottom edge, microtear to bottom back edge, light wear along both front bookfolds. Near Good DJ/Fine book. Third Part: The Return of the King. (2d ptg.) Black cloth, illustration set in bright shiny purple with some gilt, gilt fine on spine, 440 pages and fold-out map, tiny worn spot at top edges at top edges of pp. 436 to final end paper--no text affected, very tiny thread near middle of front spine middle indentation--publisher's defect. DJ black, purple with yellow lettering. DJ has very slight surface wear to tips, tiny tear at bottom of front bookfold, light wear at top and bottom front edge, very slight wear at spine edges. Good+ DJs/Fine books.

Synopsis

The Lord of the Rings is an epic high fantasy novel written by philologist and Oxford University professor J. R. R. Tolkien. The story began as a sequel to Tolkien's earlier, less complex children's fantasy novel The Hobbit (1937), but eventually developed into a much larger work. It was written in stages between 1937 and 1954, much of it during World War II.  After the success of  The Hobbit , Tolkien’s publisher asked that he produce a sequel. Although written as one big work comprised of six books,  The Lord of the Rings  was broken into three separate volumes because of post-World War II paper shortages and size and price considerations. The print run of the first editions was very small: 3,000 copies for  The Fellowship of the Ring  (1954), 3,250 copies for  The Two Towers  (1954), and 7,000 copies for  The Return of the King  (1955).  The Lord of the Rings  went on to become one of the best-selling novels ever, with more than 150 million copies sold.

And the fact that this book can be enjoyed by young children and adults alike makes it stand out among the works of fiction that fill our libraries these days.
