George Allen & Unwin Ltd, 1963. 1st Edition. Hardcover. F/NF. A 1963 First Edition three volume set comprising 13th/10th/10th Impressions. All bound in red cloth with gilt spine titles, all with the map at the back and red tint to the top of the text block. Each has its original dust jacket (now protected in a removable, clear cover) with the impression statement on the front flap matching the impression stated on the verso of the title page. All volumes have lovely condition cloth with bright gilt titles; the fore edge corners of each volume are firm, sharp and square; each text block is firm and square and all pages are clean. There is a tiny dimple dent to the front board of The Two Towers, though there is no corresponding mark present on the dust jacket. Internally, there are no previous owner names, bookplates or inscriptions, but each endpaper does have square tape burn marks from covers that had once been present to protect the dust jackets. Accordingly, each jacket is in remarkably good condition, being very clean with no tears and only the smallest of creases at the extreme spine tips. The titles on the spine panels are unusually bright and clear and those panels themselves are clear from heavy toning as is common, though there are a couple of foxing spots on The Fellowship of the Ring. There is a barely visible "V" shape area of toning from the top corner down and in to the "R" of Return on the front panel of The Return of the King corresponding to a tear in the previous protective cover. In all, a highly presentable set seldom found in such excellent condition.
