About This Item

Rare Maynard Workshop Postcard of the New Old South Tower Copley Square Boston Massachusetts "THE CITY" POST CARDS is on a title block in the middle of blank back. There is a divided rule in the middle - one side for your message, another for the recipient's address. On the bottom is the tagline "FROM PHOTOGRAMS COPYRIGHTED BY THE MAYNARD WORKSHOP - WABAN - MASSACHUSETTS" The bottom left of the image has a very light c circled (the copyright symbol), beneath that is what appears to be "F and K" with a wavy line underneath with a small mark or dot under that. The card is unused, unstamped, undated. If you are a collector of Maynard Workshop cards, you know that they are hard to date. This card is circa 1920's or early 1930's. The image is of the Old New South Church. The original church was built in 1670, the second "version" in 1720, and the version in this postcard in built in 1873, which explains the "new." The church is located at 645 Boylston Street, in Boston's Copley Square neighborhood (in the area where the Boston Marathon bombings took place.) The church is on the National Historic Register and is known for its distinctive ornate Italian Gothic Revival Style and its tower, the subject of this postcard. The 246 foot tower, or campanile, began to list in the 1920's (like the Leaning Tower of Pisa.) It, and the neighborhood known as the "Back Bay" was built on reclaimed land. The campanile was deemed to present safety risk and was "de-constructed" starting in December 1931 with the demolition completed in February 1932. The original stones were numbered and saved and the tower was rebuilt on a more substantial foundation in 1936. We think this postcard shows the original campanile, which should date this card to the 1920's. The church is to the right of the tower and the Boston Public Library is on the left side of the post card. There is an MTA trolley (the then Massachusetts Transit Authority, and probably the Arborway Line) on the ride side of the post card in front of the church. Trollies no longer service the Copley Square area. There is some light creasing in the left margin and at right top and bottom corner. The black and white image is not sharp like you might expect from a contemporary postcard. It is an unused antique postcard. . Postcard. Good/No Jacket. 48mo - over 3" - 4" tall.
