World Championship Match Signed by Fischer and Spassky

267+[4 ad] pages with photographs, tables and diagrams. Small octavo (7" x 4 1/2") bound in original publisher's pictorial wrappers. Signed by both contestants. First German edition.

The World Chess Championship 1972 was a match for the World Chess Championship between challenger Bobby Fischer of the United States and defending champion Boris Spassky of the Soviet Union. The match took place in the Laugardalshöll arena in Reykjavik, Iceland, and has been dubbed the Match of the Century. Fischer became the first American born in the United States to win the world title, and the second American overall (Wilhelm Steinitz, the first world champion, became a naturalized American citizen in 1888). Fischer's win also ended, for a short time, 24 years of Soviet domination of the World Championship. The first game was played on July 11, 1972. The last game (the 21st) began on August 31, was adjourned after 40 moves, and Spassky resigned the next day without resuming play. Fischer won the match 12 1/2 - 8 1/2, becoming the eleventh undisputed World Champion.

The 2nd American Chess Congress was held at the Kennard House in Cleveland, 5-15 December 1871. Two decisive games (+2, -2, or +1 -1) were required against each opponent. There were 73 total games. No dates or round numbers are given in the tournament book. Players were responsible for playing from 9-12 am, 2-5 pm, and 7-10 pm each day, but may have been able to arrange their own time of play, and sequence of opponents. The Ohio newspapers have more details, including dates for most of the games.
The players: George Henry Mackenzie led an interesting life away from the chessboard. Contains the report of the Congress Committee and all 432 games with notes by Steinitz. This was a 20-man Double Round Robin Tournament. One of the longest tournaments in history. In the first half of the tournament, draws were counted as a half point. In the second half, they were replayed once. Between the 38 regular rounds, 8 replay rounds, and 4 game playoff for first at the end, there were 50 rounds all told (!). Like the 4th Congress, this tournament consisted largely of foreign masters. Eight players were invited to participate, including two very strong masters: Aron Nimzowitsch from Denmark, and Akiba Rubinstein from Poland. They met with six German chess masters that included Jacques Mieses, Friedrich Sämisch, Oscar Antze, Hans Duhm, Hermann Von Gottschall, and Walther Von Holzhausen. Games were played from August 9th to the 18th. Nimzowitsch won with a near perfect score of 6½ of 7, edging out Rubinstein by half a point. The prizes were awarded to the players at the Hotel Luisenhof. But it is only from 1922 that the title of Danish chess champion was introduced, this was the first year also players from Copenhagen joined. The Master Class for 1916 was contested by 8 players. It was won b P F Johner with a score of 5 and tied two through 4 by M Marchand, O. von Lowenborg and H Krause. 5th place was claimed by O Sevensson with 3 points. 6th place was a tie between Johs Giersing and G Nyholm. The last place was regulated to E Jacobson with 1 1/2.

17 unpaginated daily bulletins, each 8 to 10 pages. Octavo (8" x 5 1/2") issued in wrappers. First edition.Mar del Plata has a rich history of chess tournaments, including their international chess tournament and open tournament. There is also an annual city tournament, which had its first edition in 1946, and reached its 62nd edition in 2007. The international tournament started off in 1928, but only in the period from 1941 to 1970 was it a truly international tournament with considerable reputation. After 1970, only seven international tournaments have been played.[1] The 1951, 1954, 1969 and 2001 editions were zonal tournaments. The 1957 contest was held at the Hotel Provincial in Mar del Plata. and is part of an iconic beachfront complex, built in 1946 by the celebrated architect Alejandro Bustillo. 84 pages with 5 plates, diagrams and table. Royal octavo (9 1/4" x 7 1/2") issued in light brown cloth with gilt lettering to spine with black flora design. Edited by Bernhard Kagan.(Bibliotheca Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana:5392) First edition.The tournament consisted of ten contestants. Efim Bogoljubov scored first a full point ahead of Akiba Rubinstein whom scored 6 points. and Rudolf Spielmann, Carl Ahues and Ernst Grunfeld tied for third each with a score of 5. The other contestants were Edgard Colle (4), Paul Johner, Paul M List and Friedrich Samisch (3 1/2), and Walther Von Holzhausen (2 1/2). This was Rubinstein's last tournament as a Berliner. He soon took up residence in Antwerp.Condition:Corners bumped and rubbed, some internal notations, spine heal rubbed through else a very good copy issued without jacket.

[8]+254+[2 pages publisher's advertisements] lacks frontispiece. Small octavo (7 3/4" x 4 3/4") rebound in 3/4 leather with paisley boards. Contains Sir William Jones' poem "Cassia: or The Game of Chess, A Poem"; based upon Pratt's "Studies of Chess". (Van der Linde: 613) 5th English edition.This was first published in London by Ogilvie in 1802 (2 volumes). First published in America in 1817 and reprinted in 1824. The name of the compiler has never been established. The miscellaneous collection of anecdotes, essays and poems at the end is not without interest. The openings and games are all in the numerical notation and no diagrams are given. (Hagedorn: 55p)Condition:Rebound in decorative half leather with red spine label with gilt lettering, new end papers and paste downs, lacks frontispiece fold out chess board, else about very good.
