Book is clean, tight and bright with slight discoloration on front cover - barely visible and former owners name in ink on FEP lower edge. Authors signature and date on title page. Dust jacket show a bit of shelf wear, a few small repaired (in verso) hair tears at top edge, yellowing at flap edge - and is now under mylar protective wrap making a fine appearance. Very generously illustrated throughout, with 108 black and white full page photographs of the sculptures of William Edmondson mostly figures of people, animals, angels and carved headstones in limestone. Preface is illustrated by 12 original photographs by Edward WESTON. A scarce book on this notable self-taught African-American folk artist. Very scarce book with even scarcer signature.

He worked for the Dallas Star, Jet Magazine and the NAACP. There are 109 mostly full page black and white photographs. He got photos of important celebrities when they came to Dallas: Martin Luther King, Ella Fitzgerald, Joe Louis and Thurgood Marshall to name a few. His photos of regular folks are the best though. Congresswoman Barbara Jordan wrote the Preface and said, "These are images of the ordinary lives of extraordinary people". The book is in near fine condition with only very slight shelf wear. The dust jacket has a crease on the upper left front. The pages are clean and unmarked, and the corners are square. The author has dated and signed on the title page (no inscription).
