Dean & Son. 65 Ludgate Hill. London. E. C. - No date. Circa 1865 - 1872. FIRST PRINTING OF THIS EDITION. 8vo. (9.9 x 6.7 inches). 8 leaves of text which each have a three section pop up scene, printed in colours, mounted above the letterpress. The three sections are joined together by a purple silk ribbon, attached with brass rivets, and give a peep-show effect when lifted. Publishers purple endpapers with multiple adverts. Full colour printed front board on pink paper. Rear board on blue paper with publishers adverts lettered in black. Dark green cloth spine. Small printed paper label of a Parisian Bookseller on the front free endpaper. A remarkable survivor. There are two small closed tears that have been expertly repaired to the rear but there is no loss and the pop-ups are in wonderful condition. There is a little rubbing to the edges of the boards and spine but overall this is a superior copy of an uncommon and fragile book. Issued as no. 2 in Deans new scenic book series, this is one of just four titles published. --- Dean's were at this address from 1865 to 1872. (Brown. London publishers and printers, c. 1800-1870).

Description:
The Modern Press. 1886. First separate issue, larger untrimmed variant, inscribed by the author. Originally printed in the April 1885-March 1886 issues of "To-Day", this first edition was printed from the corrected and revised stereos of the original setting for the journal. This is the larger, variant issue, with the preliminary blank leaf bound at the beginning. Shaw explains the variant this way: "The size of the bigger copies is due to the fact that they reproduced not only the type but the format of To-day. But the booksellers objected that in this form it occupied too much room to be displayed on their stalls and counters. It was probably cut down as far as the margins would allow to meet this objection" (Laurence). Inscribed by Shaw, "This is the first Issue, which was so tall that the booksellers refused to exhibit it on their counters, as it took too much room. So it had to be cut down. G. Bernard Shaw 26/7/30." . ---- Housed in a green cloth covered chemise and quarter green morocco slip…
