In this book Edith Pargeter combined her excellent historical novel abilities with her nom-de-plume Ellis Peters' well-constructed mysteries and started the boom in historical mysteries that continues to this day. There are many earlier examples of the form, but this is where it takes off and becomes a major publishing category. Historically important, well written, and a scarce book to find in nice condition. This copy has a previous owner's minuscule inscription on the front free endpaper (signature and date of 10 Dec 77, and the cryptic notation "F.E." indicating it was purchased through British bookseller Francis Edwards Ltd.), and very slight bumping to the spine, both head and tail, creasing the jacket slightly. Fine unread book in a Fine clamshell box that has very tiny nick bottom edge front board – possibly a binding flaw; no jacket as issued. This is copy number 1 of 17 Collector's editions bound in simulated leather. These have an original Phil Parks B/W illustration from the book mounted on lid of box opposite the book. This copy, since it is number 1, has the first illustration. The front board has a color reproduction of a full-color Parks illustration of Haywood standing in front of Mickey's Trueblood Barbershop. Five Aaron Gunner short stories by Haywood, four of which have never appeared before. Introduction by Lawrence Block; Afterword by Jeffrey Deaver; illustrations by Phil Parks. This copy signed on the title page by Haywood, Block, Deaver, and Parks.

Very Good book has the common age toning along the board edges, tiny dings to corners, slight soiling to page edges, with lower inch and and half of spine slightly concave inward; in Very Good to Near Fine dust jacket that has very slight yellowing front and back panels with mild rubbing, and slight edge and corner wear. This was a very fragile production. Willeford's fictionalized story of the Son of Sam killer and the Sheriff Deputy who caught him. This copy has been signed by Willeford on the front end page and inscribed: To Lou Maradie – I think you'll like this. Dr. Schwartz thinks Berko faked his psychosis. Dr. Abrahamsen does not.
