The covers are lightly rubbed. The cloth at the spine ends is lightly chipped. The underlying boards are peeking through at the corners. The first two pages are hanging on by a thread. Ferris has inscribed the front free endsheet. Important and valuable early firsthand account of life in Mormon Utah during its first decade by an objective observer. Ferris was appointed the territorial secretary of Utah in 1852-53 a position he held for six months. He subsequently moved to Califronia and wrote this account of his time among the Mormons. The contents are suprisingly even-keeled for a non-Mormon of the time. Flake 3329.

Better than very good. Backstrip gently faded. Bookplate on the front pastedown. Benjamin Ferris (1802-1891) served in the (federally installed) Utah Territorial government in 1852-53. "In the early part of the summer of 1852 I was solicited to discharge the duties of Secretary of the Territory of Utah. A Curiosity, long cherished, to visit a portion of the world about which many marvelous accounts had been given, induced me to accept the vacant post. Decorative blind stamping to boards. Frontispiece portrait of Joseph Smith in profile. Title page vignette of Mormon coins in Utah. Very good minus. The extremities are rubbed, and the spine is darkened (gilt still bright). There are a couple of 1" closed tears in the top margins of the front free endsheet and flyleaf, the endsheets are discolored, and the pages are age-toned.
