Mit 12 Kupfertafeln (title page with vignette portrait of the author, 11 plates). 1 vols. 4to (10 x 8-1/4 inches). Recent quarter calf (original backstrip laid down) and contemporary boards. Annotated in a neat contemporary German hand. Title a bit stained and spotted, otherwise a very good copy. Neue, unveränderte Ausgabe". Third (revised) edition (first published 1802 and 1817). Mit 12 Kupfertafeln (title page with vignette portrait of the author, 11 plates). 1 vols. 4to (10 x 8-1/4 inches). The Father of Acoustics. Ernst Florens Friedrich Chladni (1756-1827) was a German physicist, amateur musician and instrument maker. Fascinated by the phenomenon of sound, Chladni estimated the speed of sound and is now famous for studying the vibrations of surfaces by observing the patterns created by sound waves on sand-covered plates (known commonly now as "Chladni plates"). Chladni…

Leipzig:: Breitkopf & Hartel, 1802., 1802. Square 4to. (233 x 210 mm) xxxii, 310 pp. Engraved portrait vignette of the author, by F.W. Bollinger, on title-page, plus 11 engraved plates*. Modern half tan calf over marbled boards, raised bands, gilt-stamped green morocco spine label. Exlib ink stamps, bookplate of Andras Gedeon. Fine. FIRST EDITION. "Chladni, professor of physics in Breslau, was the first to reduce the general association between vibration and pitch to a tabular basis and thus to lay the foundation of the modern science of acoustics. His first results were reported in New Discoveries in the Theory of Sound (1787), and were greatly enlarged in Acoustics (1802). [Printing and the Mind of Man]. / "By spreading sand over plates and running a violin low over their edges, Chladni was able to observe the structure of the resulting vibrations, because the sand collected along the nodal curves where there was no motion. Patterns formed in this way were symmetrical and often spectacular, the…

1802. Leipzig, bey Breitkopf und Härtel, 1802, 4°, (2k), XXXII, 310 pp., 11 Kupfertafeln, als 12 Kufper gilt das Titelkupfer, Pappband im Stil d.Zt.; feines Expl. First Edition! Complete, the title vignette portrait of Chladni engraved by F.W. Bollinger in the this volume counts as eleventh plate! "The work is the consummation of Chladni's classical researches in the theory of sound, he covered thin plates with sand and then set them to vibraiting by drawing a violin bow along their edges. The pattern that formed, known as "Chladni's Figures", helped to define the shape assumed by vibrating plates. Chladnis based his work on the mathematical investigations of the Bernoulis, Euler and Lagrange, and his study is a cornerstone of modern acoustics." "Timoshenko credits this work with arousing great interest in the theory of plates noting that Chladni's experiments showed the "Existence of nodal lines for various modes of its (a plate's) motion " and determined the corresponding frequencies."…

Leipzig: Breitkopf und Hartel, 1802. First edition, 4to, pp. [2], xxxii, 310, engraved vignette portrait on title page, 11 folding plates; original marbled paper-covered boards, paper label on spine; binding and label rubbed, but a good, sound copy, unrestored; contained in a brown leather slipcase. "Chladni (1756-1827), professor of physics in Breslau, was the first to reduce the general association between vibration and pitch to a tabular basis, and thus to lay the foundation of the modern science of acoustics. His first results were first reported in New Discoveries in the Theory of Sound, 1787, and were greatly enlarged upon in Acoustics, 1802. He spread sand on plates made of metal and glass, which were fixed in clamps. He then applied a violin bow to the edge of each plate and recorded the patterns produced thereby in the sand. These figures are still known by Chladni's name" (Printing and the Mind of Man 288b). Chladni was from an early age interested in music, and was himself an amateur…
