Published posthunously in France in 1952 this was the final work of Gide - for which he was using the title "Ainsi Soit-il" - written in a very accessible conversational style: "I don't know what the results will be, but I have made up my mind to write at random." Translated from the French, with an introduction (in which he talks about Gide's at the time he was writing this) and notes, by Justin O'Brien. Index. xiv, 166, vii pp
