George Wharton James (27 September 1858 – 8 November 1923) was an American popular lecturer, photographer, journalist and editor. He served in parishes in Nevada and Southern California, gradually beginning his journalism and writing career. An editor of two magazines, he also wrote more than 40 books and many articles and pamphlets on California and the American Southwest.

This work gives history of the desert, its explorers, rivers, plant life, reptiles, insects, birds, water and more. It also gives us information of Palm Springs, prospecting and mining, the Salton Sea, etc. A very nice clean set bound in beige cloth over light blue pictorial gilt cloth, spine lettering and top edges gilt, no names or bookplates, small bookseller ticket to rear board, some darkening to spines, sharp corners.[ Howes J-44].

Carl Eytel. 547pp. Octavo [22.5 cm] 1/4 tan cloth with bluish gray cloth covered boards, gilt stamped titles on the spines, and gilt stamped vignettes on the front cover. Top edges gilt. The text block of volume 1 is cracked at p. 81, and again at p. 161. The endpapers of this volume are also split along the hinges. There is a thin 2 inch moisture mark to the backstrip of volume 1. The preliminary pages have a couple of previous owner's names in pen. Large fold-out map present in volume 1. The illustrator, Carl Eytel, was a German-American artist who lived in Palm Springs, California, and built his reputation for paintings and drawings of desert landscapes.

There is light wear to the tops and bottoms of the spines, the tissue guards on the frontispieces are a bit spotted and discolored, the front inner hinge of vol.1 is cracked, and there is a previous owner's bookplate on the front inner board of each volume.
