Gilt cover lettering, gilt vignette of small ship among icebergs. Tight. Very clean, in & out. . TP dated 1871, with 1868 cp date and the engraved tp dated 1872. This edition with all 244 illustrations of the original 1856 2 vol edition. PLUS: This, and only this, edition lists all these illustrations. The 1st edition did not. The numbering and titles of the plates are the same(with 1 exception) for both 2 vol & 1 vol editions. So the 1 vol plate index can be used to find each plate in the earlier 2 vol editions. This 1 vol edition WAS NOT published with the fold out chart, but LAID IN is the fold out chart from an 1857 printing. All text block edges gilt, with all 3 smooth and bright as new. The writer's and explorer's account of the second and last United States Grinnell Expedition in search of Sir John Franklin.
Book is beautifully illustrated with 23 steel engravings and more than 250 wood engravings from original designs.
Book is very good. Solid with clean brown cloth bound boards. Gilt vignette on front board and publisher's logo embossed on rear board. Gilt lettering on spine but rather faded. Boards are good with wear at corners. A little fraying at head and tail of spine.All edges are gilt.
Internally clean with no markings, inscriptions or foxing. Leaves lightly age toned. Binding is good with light cracking at hinges and some netting exposed. However, not shaken or loose. Still tight. A heavy book of approx 1.6 kgs may require higher than usual shipping costs. Please contact re shipping costs for your location.

Early issue in one volume. beautifully illustrated with many elegant steel engraved full-page plates, and more than two hundred and fifty wood engravings, from original designs. Thick 8vo, bound ln the publisher's original red-brown polished cloth, with gilt lettering to the spine panel and gilt pictorial device and lettering to the upper cover, both covers blocked and decorated in blind. 766 pp. A fine copy, clean and bright, with strong hinges., the issue guards are still intact, some light mellowing to the spine panel and a bit of shelving evidence. A very handsome and well preserved copy indeed. FIRST EDITION THUS OF THIS IMPORTANT WORK. Doctor Kane had been the ship's surgeon on the First Ginnell Expedition of 1850 and upon that mission's unsuccessful return he immediately set out in command of the Second.
