Description:
New York:: Frank F. Lovell & Co., , (1889). Hardcover -. Good condition in embossed brown cloth with gilt title panel on spine. . First or early American edition. A late novel by this prolific author who wrote using the pseudonym Ouida, and who is best known for the classic story 'A Dog of Flanders.' This follows the life and loves of a young aristocrat named Guilderoy, his journey from his privileged upbringing in England, through his travels across Europe and his involvement in a complicated love triangle. Oscar Wilde's review commented "Guilderoy, with all its faults, which are great, and its absurdities, which are greater, is a book to be read" and he also quoted several epigrams from it - among them "Moralists say that a soul should resist passion. They might as well say that a house should resist an earthquake." Lovell's library, no. 1353400 pp.
