Although the title page and list of contents state that the work comprises eight "bookes" this early edition only has the first five , the subsequent "bookes" appeared rather later. Internally in very good condition with a few marks, binding sound subject to the front hinge being cracked and a limited number of leaves partly loose, cover (could be contemporary) very worn

This work includes the first 5 books (not 8 books) of the Ecclesiastical Polity, and also includes five short works, each with its own title page. Book 5 of the Polity also has a separate engraved title page. Bound in contemporrary calf, worn and age-darkened, with some scratches on covers. re-backed, preserving some of the original spine. Hinges restored with cloth tape. Internally quite good, excepting some brittle page edges (first and last few leaves). A previous owner has copies some long passages of bibliographic infromation in longhand on the free endpapers. There is an extra engraved portrait of Hooker (about 80 mmm by 120 mm) pasted in facing the engraved title; the title itself has an extra backing added for reinforcement.
