A tight, attractive first edition in the rarely seen dust jacket -- plus a choice autograph addition: Tipped at the top of the front flyleaf is a 5" X 2½" slip bearing a handsome "Very sincerely / Mary Roberts Rinehart" signed large and bold in blue fountain pen ink, with a typed date below of April 24, 1922. Fine. Light-hearted World War One doughboy fiction about (to cite rear jacket panel) "the adventures that befell Sergeant Gray of Headquarters Troops...." Tough to find such an attractive copy and in the jacket.

Nice autograph addition: Tipped by one edge opposite half-title page is a heavy stock 7¼" X 4" envelope, cancelled in Washington, DC on 21 November 1927, boldly addressed to a Wisconsin address in Rinehart's distinctive handwriting in black ink. NOT signed by her, but a handsome sample of her handwriting and if you tip up the envelope on its verso can be seen her imprinted name and Washington, DC residential address,

Quite handsome first edition of this mystery -- and with lovely autograph addition: Tipped to front flyleaf is a Typed Note Signed from Rinehart, 1p, 8" X 10¼", Washington, DC, 31 March 1922. Addressed to George Vincent Campbell. Very good. Lightly age toned and with original folds (not weakened); single small mounting trace. On letterhead of Wardman Park Hotel, Rinehart makes a young admirer very happy: "You have asked for my autograph, so here it is!" Large, bold full signature in blue ink.

YOU KNOW HOW WOMEN ARE!, Doran, 1920, first edition, 2 tiny tears to the head of the fragile spine panel, else just about fine in a vg+/near fine dust-wrapper with some light dust- soil to the dust-wrapper spine. SIGNED and dated in the year of publication by Rinehart. Scarce thus. Inexplicably, the title page on the Rinehart contribution reads Hodder & Stoughton while everywhere else (including the copyright page of this title) reads George H. Doran !!!

Book very good, jacket fair with front flap split from front panel, general edgewear, chipping to rear panel and top of spine, yellowing, etc. Inscribed to Arthur McKeogh, "Whose abiding faith in this book from its inception surely entitles him not only to this first copy off the press, but to the gratitude and very real affection of its author. Mary Roberts Rinehart, May 25, 1936." McKeogh, a senior editor at "Good Housekeeping" first met Rinehart when he was sent to work with her on the serialization of her autobiography, "My Story," during which time the two became friendly with each other; McKeogh was a very hands-on editor who had no problem getting Rinehart to rewrite sections. The $75,000 Good Housekeeping paid for the serialization of "The Doctor" was the most Rinehart was ever paid for a serial. Solid. unclipped, and quite uncommon, dust-jacket, ($1.25 on spine panel), has some chipping to spine ends and tips. A closed tear along on the front hinge reinforced by tape on the verso though invisible from the front. Some light rubbing and toning to spine and edges. Still bright and complete. Inscribed, signed and dated in the year pf publication on the front end-paper, "To Mr. Lyman Pierce, With the best wishes and congratulations on the work he is doing in Pittsburgh, PA, of the Pittsburgh, PA author of this book.
