It was the humiliating end of a campaign which promised, in the spring of 1777, to bring the Revolutionary War to an end. More than anything else, the defeat of Burgoyne ensured the success of the American rebellion. During the nineteenth century various contemporary accounts of Burgoyne's expedition were published; but the existence of still another account by a British officer, in the library of the United States Military Academy, was ignored.
