For this uncommon edition, which contains the first appearance in book form of 14 of its 15 stories, Twain edited the pieces from their US serialization by "generally toning down his language to suit his notion of a British audience" (MTPO). He visited his English publisher Routledge later that year and received from literary London his greatest reception yet. "It was in England that Mark Twain was first made to feel that he had come into his rightful heritage. Whatever may have been the doubts concerning him in America, there was no question in England" (Paine, p. 462). Routledge, in their efforts to secure the British copyright for works by American authors, launched the Routledge's American Library series with Twain's Celebrated Jumping Frog in 1867.
