An anthology of American proletarian fiction, poetry, reportage, drama and literary criticism, with a 20- page introduction by Joseph Freeman. The writings date predominantly from the period 1930-1935. Many previously appeared in the pages of the New Masses, New Republic, Partisan Review, Dynamo, Anvil, Left-Front, and elsewhere. Interesting gift inscription, endpapers and spine toned, a few like pencil notes in text in an unknown hand, about very good lacking the dust jacket. Signed by editor Granville Hicks. Represented are a who's who of left wing authors including Richard Wright, Langston Hughes, and many, many other. Hicks was an influential and occasionally controversial literary critic and reviewer, he was influenced equally by Van Wyck Brooks and Karl Marx and wrote extensively on social questions. For a time he was a member of the Communist Party and Literary editor of New Masses but broke with the Party before WWII.
