Edges gilt. Inserted paper says "Presented by the Girls' Auxiliary to Miss Winnie Martin on the occasion of her leaving Glasgow for Vancouver, Aptil, 1913." 31 leaves with writing in different hands on multi-coloured paper. Winnie Martin and her family (Maisie Martin, William I. Martin) left Glasgow for Canada on the RMS Grampian in May 1913. They settled in the Grandview neighbourhood of Vancovuer. One drawing by Elizabeth Duncan of Shawlands, Glasgow, is a "Wheel of Fortune" with 18 sections: 1. "What a prize you will be to someone." 2. Rear cover detached, spine ends chipped, small stain to front cover. Bookseller's label and inscription on back of rear cover. One of B.C.'s forgotten heroes, Moberly (1832-1915) experienced the Cariboo Road, snow-covered mountain peaks, meetings with a grizzly bear, Sir John A. Macdonald and Brigham Young, railway building, a fall through the ice while playing "shinny" (hockey), onions for supper, fragile canoes, and life in early Vancouver - and lived to tell the tale. One the more prosaic side, Moberly was a civil engineer who laid out the site for New Westminster in 1859 as well as surveying several roads and trails throughout B.C. He was also instrumental in his role as a surveyor for the Canadian Pacific Railway.

Some fading to cloth, long crease on front cover. "The twentieth century of the world's progress is Canada's, and the Pacific is the Ocean of the Future. Yet, despite the advertising both have received, less is known of them in England and the world generally than is their due" (p. vii). The author seeks to rectify the world's ignorance with this volume describing B.C.'s geography, mines, lumber, fisheries, government, etc. Index and glossary at rear.
