Elon Huntington Hooker (1869-1938) was a chemist and hydrodynamic engineer who founded Hooker Electrochemical Company in 1905. His daughter, Blanchette, married John D. Rockefeller III. Another daughter married writer John Marquand.

This copy INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the late President on the page with the publisher's logo preceding the title page: "To --- - With Very/Best Wishes,/Ronald Reagan/March 8 - 1991." Books genuinely signed by this popular President have become quite scarce and usually turn up with a signed bookplate rather than actually signed in the book, as the case here. Last we heard, the Reagan Presidential Library was still selling copies, though reprints, with a signed bookplate for $4,000. One should also be aware that the market has been flooded with fake Reagan signatures in books sold on where "signed" often means forged.

The moving Pulitzer Prize-winning autobiography by this Irish-born New York City teacher, made into a fine film. This is an exceptional Association Copy INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the title page at the time of publication to R'lene Dahlberg who heads the list of Acknowledgments for the book as the one who "fanned the embers." Dahlberg, the sixth of seven wives of author Edward Dahlberg, was a fellow teacher of McCourt's at Stuyvesant High School as well as a friend and muse, as evidenced by this inscription dated 25 November 1996: "For R'lene - with love/and memories of a/friendship that reaches/back almost beyond/memory and will continue/well into the millenium/Love/Frank McCourt." Exceptional archive of 15 pieces including 4 TYPED LETTERS SIGNED from Merton to his typist, Ann Skakel (mother of Ethel Kennedy); a wonderful TYPED LETTER from Merton (signed in type) to his friend and teacher, Donald Walsh; 8 retained TYPED LETTERS from Skakel to Merton; a TYPED LETTER SIGNED from Walsh to Skakel; and a photograph of Merton's ordination annotated on the verso by Walsh. Superb content throughout with Merton's letters, SIGNED as "Father Louis" or "Father M. Louis Merton," containing much discussion of his work, including forwarding the carbon copy of his manuscript of his new book THE ASCENT TO TRUTH (not present here). Laid in is a small original color photograph of Meredith with a little girl annotated on the rear by Hoffman and an AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED from Hoffman to Meredith on a post card regarding Laura Riding's criticism of his article about Robert Graves.

Of a total edition of 326 copies, this is #48 of 126 that contain a special drawing, hand-colored, by Kristen Heyen, the twelve year-old daughter of the author, and that is SIGNED by both the artist and the author. This copy is also INSCRIBED and SIGNED to the poet William Meredith in 1978 in Brockport: "For William, with/love from Kristen +//Bill Heyen." In the original envelope addressed in Heyen's hand to Meredith.

An absolutely superb presentation copy linking two giants of nineteenth century American Literature. With the bookplate of the Longfellow Collection of Harvard College Library on the front pastedown, deaccessioned.

Small octavo (3-1/4" x 5-5/8") in original flexible blue cloth. A Grolier American 100 book, this would be a run-of-the-mill copy but for the remarkable holograph additions by Holmes within. On the recto of the ad page before the title page announcing other titles by Holmes the author has handwritten the last and best known stanza of his famous poem "The Last Leaf"--"And if I should live to be/The last leaf upon the tree/In the spring,/Let them smile, as I do now,/At the old forsaken bough/Where I cling"--and SIGNED with his initials and the dates 1831 and 1890 corresponding to the date of authorship and the date of the inscription. Fair copy AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT of a complete poem of 29 lines titled "A Nearly Next to Naught Song," completely in Frost's hand and SIGNED by him at the conclusion with the dedication "For Richard Hocking/once the author's pupil for/a lesson or two at Shady Hill/or rather on the porch on/Irving Street" on a 6-1/8" x 7-3/4" piece of paper. In the upper right corner in pencil Hocking has written "1957." The text is the poem published as "A Never Naught Song" in the 1962 volume IN THE CLEARING. In this version Frost has eliminated two lines--"Out of coming-in/Into having been!"--and made various other changes in words and punctuation. The Houghton Library at Harvard has a Frost notebook, undated, containing this poem titled as "A Next to Nearly Naught Song." It is one of two poems by Frost along with "All Revelations" (1938) concerned with descriptions of the quantum nature of atoms.
