Docketed and signed on the verso of the second page Dennison: "Respectfully forwarded to the President. W. Dennison . . ."William H. Beard was a New York City artist noted for his satirical animal. William Dennison was Lincoln's Postmaster General and Civil War Governor of Ohio. Beard addresses his letter to Dennison seeking a government position for a friend, and Dennison in turn refers the letter to President Hayes. In fact I had quite forgotten that I did belong to it, and your letter comes as a welcome reminder that I should cease to do so. Not that I think it does any harm to belong to these things, so as to be able to keep an eye on their goings on. Yours faithfully, [signed] William Walton. Usual fold, one pin hole and with some staining to the lower right. William Walton (1902-1983) took leave from military service in the second world war to produce scores for propaganda films such as The First of the Few (1942) and an a morale-boosting version of Shakespeare's Henry V (1944). Waltons broad musical compositions included orchestral, choral, chamber, solo, and film scores.

Allan Melville's Signature on a work of scrivener's art.Allan Melville was Herman Melville's brother, literary agent, and when this document was signed, adult roommate. Allan resided in New York with a law office at 10 Wall Street. In 1856, Herman still had several adventures to go before he too would be pulled into the world of documents and scriveners at the Custom House.. An interesting piece of Melvilliana. Fine.

Robert Tyler, Confederate Register of the Treasury during the Civil War, was the eldest son ofJohn Tyler, the tenth President of the United States. Previously, he served as private secretary for
his father's presidential administration. In later life, he was the editor of the Montgomery
Advertiser. His wife, Priscilla Cooper Tyler, acted as First Lady of the United States from
September 10, 1842, to June 26, 1844, between the death of her mother-in-law and President
Tyler's remarriage.
