[Pope] Matthews, John, Eloisa en Dishabille: being a new version of that Lady's Celebrated Epistle to Abelard. Ascribed to Professor Porson. London, printed in the year 1822. 8vo, [ii;43;1], 19 cm, printed in parallel text throughout, full blue morocco with gilt edges and rosettes, gilded page edges, front hinge cracked but holding. Only fifty copies of this lively satire of Pope were printed, so stated on the verso of the half-title, by W. Hughes, 29, Maiden Lane, Covent Garden. First published in 1784, this copy has the book plate of Charles George Milnes Gaskell. Bookseller's tag of W. & G. Foyle, Ltd., London, is pasted in on the inside front cover.
Charles George Milnes Gaskell PC (23 January 1842 – 9 January 1919) was an English lawyer and Liberal Party politician. Gucht. 8vo; 126 pages, collation is correct, but A3&4 have been mistakenly signed as B3&4. Four full-page engravings by Gucht. The mock-poem on the fourth book has its own (second) title-page, p. 55 (D4). New endpapers, Booktag of Subun-So Book Store Tokyo Kanda. Signed binding by R. Wallis. Full polished green calf with gold fillet, 5 raised bands, gilt lettering on the spine, now slightly faded. Slight wear at the head. A beautifully bound fine copy of this popular title. With its own green paper slipcase.
