Boston (Updike's Merrymount Press), 1918. 119 pp. with a photograph of the eponymous Jane as a portrait by Rembrandt. Black cloth spine with gilt titles, marbled boards and uncut edges. A little foxing on broad margins. Signed on the half-title, "Mrs Brand from Edward S. Martin, May 7. 1922". Mrs Brand is Phyllis, the daughter of Chiswell Dabney Langhorne and the sister of Nancy Astor who married Mr. (later Lord or Baron) Brand when he was a diplomat in Washington (1918-1919). Brand was one of Lord Milner's "Kindergarten" of Oxford graduates who had served in South Africa and became part of the Clivedon Set. Martin was one of the founders of the Harvard Lampoon and the first Literary Editor of Life Magazine surviving to write the magazine's own obituary.. Signed by Author(s). 2nd Edition. Hardcover. Presentation inscription "To Harry From A.S.S. and P.R.S, September 13-92". Harry is Harry leslie Sherwood who entered the Foreign Office in 1882, rising to become Inspector General of H.M. Consulates and editor of the F.O. List-the donors are assumed to be members of his family. The book contains 2 press cuttings including the first printed version of "The Absent-minded Beggar" published by the Daily Mail on 31st October 1899. The poem is headed "Rudyard Kipling's New Poem" with "Copyright in England and America by the "Daily Mail" publishing company." Medley (Presdt.) 15 June 1866" the author of the Account.... In 1860, he lost a match to Ignatz Von Kolisch. Against Medley, Ignatz Von Kolisch sometimes took two hours for three moves. Plates of Indian buildings and drawings by Hankin of the different types of geometric decoration and how the designs are generated. One of the earliest attempts to investigate "penrose tiling". Hankin was a bacteriologist by profession working in India who was credited with being one of the first discoverers of bacteriophage activity in the Ganges and Jumna rivers. He also wrote on bird flight and aeronautics. Signed on the front cover by Hankin who presented this copy to Eileen Power, of Girton College, founder of the Economic History Review, who visited and wrote on Europeans in India.
