Octavo; vii, 216pp. In contemporary half leather over green cloth boards (a little rubbed and worn, remnants of early paper label to head of spine), five raised spine bands, gilt lettered leather spine label to second compartment, all page edges marbled, contemporary ink inscription to front blank, early library blind-stamp to first two leaves ('William Todd and Co. Library, Limerick'), light foxing to opening and closing leaves, unobtrusive light paper browning and occasional spots ans stains otherwise internally clean. The title page bears no date but the publisher's address and book's typography place it in the late 1850s to early 1860s. Very good early example of this American novel of the civil war era.

First edition, two volumes, octavo; viii, 146, [1]; 156pp. In attractive uniform contemporary full calf over five raised spine bands (lightly worn), gilt lettered black and red title and volume numbers labels in second and third compartments respectively, remaining compartments gilt, early engraved ownership labels to front pastedowns, volume 1 lacks front free endpaper and title page, opening and closing leaves of volume 1 marginally chipped and torn well clear of text, a textually complete clean copy of Hawkesworth's popular novel in first edition, with errata page at close of volume 1. Good copy of these early well illustrated topographical accounts forming volume 5 of Britton and Brayley's Beauties of England and Wales series.

In full leather prize binding by Bickers and Son, gilt heraldic arms to front board, gilt double fillets to board margins, five raised spine bands between gilt double fillets, gilt lettered spine label to second compartment, remaining compartments gilt, binding worn but sound, matbled endpapers, presentation label to front pastedown, occasional unobtrusive soiling and spotting to text and plates, last few leaves (booksellers catalogue) excised. A good copy.

Sound, usable copy of this comprehensively annotated edition of the works of Tacitus, a well bound substantial volume with plenty of shelf appeal.
