CONDITION: UNREAD c. 1961 The World Publishing Company large hardcover (decorated boards) & dust jacket (in mylar cover), first edition, assumed 2nd printing. The book has problems, but IS unread and the interior is clean and tight. The problem is with the corners and edges of the boards (see or send for the scans) and with the dust jacket which has extreme edge wear top and bottom spine and at corners and is covered in mylar cover to prevent further erosion. I have done some small cosmetic work on the bottom edges of the boards, but it's strictly cosmetic and the corners are frayed. Questions encouraged and answered. CONDITION: NEW 2004 Castle Books hardcover (black boards) & dust jacket (in mylar cover), new edition (so they say), assumed first printing. Very few B&W drawings. There is a tiny foxed area top fore edge. CONTENT: Tracing the development of the civilizations of pre-Columbian America from village communities to prosperous city-states, this is a fascinating account of how these civilizations culminated in the magnificent empires of the Aztecs and Inca. This book was originally published in 1972 so there have been significant discoveries since publication; however, there is much merit in the text as is. IMHO.

There are ballplayers, dancers, calendars, counting devices and a pantheon of gods to be colored. Reviewer: "This is a great book to use in middle and some high school classes. It shows the artwork, style and abilities of PreColumbian artist. Actual figures and glyphs from various archaeologial sites and museum codex pages give history, geography and anthropology students a real sense of PreColumbian life styles, interest, history and religions." CONTENT: Drawing on the archaeological evidence and the written records from the period of the Spanish conquest, Kendall has painted an evocative and rounded picture of their daily routine and ritual occasions, including feasts, games, and sacrifices. She highlights the remarkable approach of the Inca emperors to town planning and describes the construction of their homes, palaces, temples and fortifications, and the organization of work forces for farming, building and fighting, as well as the education of children, the responsibility of adults and care of the aged. While this is an older book, the observations and research are still in good standing with modern findings.
