J. Maisonneuve et Ch. Leclerc. Paris. 1889. FIRST EDITION. 8vo. (9.9 x 6.4 inches). vii, 300pp. A very good copy in a fine early leather binding of full dark green morocco. Spine with gilt ruled lines, floral design and lettering. Front board with ruled panels and floral designs, all in gilt Single gilt ruled border to the rear board and board edges. Gilt inner dentelles. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Armorial bookplate of noted author of books on folklore and topography, Sir George Laurence Gomme (1853 - 1916) on the front pastedown. Some offsetting to the endpapers from the leather turn-ins. A little rubbing to the extremities and the spine faded to an attractive brown but overall still a lovely copy of this scarce work in a fine quality binding. The binding is unsigned but is certainly the work of a master bookbinder.

Williams and Norgate. London. 1917. FIRST EDITION. 8vo. (9 x 6.2 inches). xciii, 372, 2 pp. Cheap war-time paper browned to the edges but overall a very good copy in publishers blue cloth with gilt ruled lines and lettering to the spine. In the rare original printed dustwrapper which has long thin areas of loss to the top of the front and rear panel and both inner hinges are split, but the wrapper is essentially complete. A scarce title in first edition, and rare in the original dustrapper. ---- A detailed study of Cinema in Britain during it's infancy, including the opinions of Children, moral guardians, and many British film makers of the day.

Macmillan and Co. London and New York. 1889. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION. 8vo. (7.7 x 5.3 inches). Portrait frontis, folding colour map and thirty seven illustrations and diagrams throughout. Publishers dark green cloth with gilt ruled lines and letering to the spine. Boards with single blind ruled borders. Curiously, the title page has London as the lead address but has the US printer, John Wilson and Son, University Press (of Cambridge, Massachusetts), on the verso of the title page, whereas the British edition was printed by R. & R. Clark of Edinburgh. This American edition is very similar to the English edition except the 2pp of adverts at the end of the text are for Macmillan New York's current titles, and the binding spine has fewer gilt ruled lines to the US version. A little minor rubbing to the extremities of the binding but this is a lovely clean and tight copy inside and out. Rare in such fine condition.

Weidenfeld and Nicolson. London. 1968. FIRST EDITION. 8vo. (8.6 x 5.7 inches). Illustrated with 19 half-tone photographic plates, including six pages reproducing Watson's letter to Max Delbruck, telling of the Double Helix, and 11 diagrams within the text. A very good copy with previous owner's name and date (May 1968) written neatly on the front free endpaper. Original dustwrapper with some minor chipping to the corners and edges. A slight forward lean to the book but overall a very good copy.

Illustrated with 19 half-tone photographic plates, including six pages reproducing Watson's letter to Max Delbruck, telling of the Double Helix, and 11 diagrams within the text. A very bright, clean copy. Original dustwrapper with one small chip and a couple of small closed tears, otherwise a better than very good example. Overall a very good copy.

Longmans, Green, and Co. London. 1872 - 74. FIRST EDITION. Three volumes. 8vo. (8.8 x 5.8 inches). Previous owner armorial bookplate (Isaac Holden, politician and inventor of a wool-combing machine, who received a Baronetcy in 1893) and also ink name and address stamped to the front blank free endpapers. Some foxing to the blank endpapers otherwise a very good bright and clean set throughout. All three volumes in fine nineteenth century bindings of full tan calf. Spines with raised bands, the compartments ruled and fully decorated in gilt. Red and green labels, gilt. Boards with double gilt ruled borders. Marbled endpapers. All edges marbled. Some minor rubbing to edges but generally a very good copy in attractive nineteenth century bindings. The bindings are unsigned but very high quality work.

Printed for William Thurlbourn. Cambridge. 1739. THIRD EDITION, CORRECTED. 8vo. (8.1 x 5.2 inches). A clean and fresh copy in an attractive contemporary full panelled calf binding. Spine with five raised bands. Title label ruled and lettered in gilt. Blind tooling around the lighter tan panels on both boards. A little rubbing to the edges and splitting to the very top and bottom of the hinges only, with both boards still firmly attached. A very good copy in a lovely mid 18th century binding. ----- Collation: lvi (including publishers advert leaf), (i errata leaf, i blank), 517pp, (1 blank), 82pp ( The two sermons have separate title pages and a separate sequence of pagination; the register is continuous. 'Divine predestination' is of the sixth edition and 'A sermon on the fall of man' is of the second edition, (24pp Index).

Neat ink inscription to the front pastedown endpaper, possibly from the translator; "With affectionate greetings from Oliver." otherwise a fine clean copy throughout. Published black cloth with gilt lettering to the spine. In the scarce original dustwrapper. A couple of chips to the top edge and the spine toned but generally in very good condition. A fine copy of the book in a very good dustwrapper. Originally published in Russian in 1927.

Board edges and turn-ins with gilt decorative roll. All edges gilt. Yellow coated endpapers. Some minor wear to the edges of the binding but overall a very good and attractive copy of this rare work, both inside and out. Two fold out plates, one the order of the battle of the confederate armies, 18th July 1705, the second a plan of the town and castle of Nice. A very good copy in a recent binding of half dark brown calf. Spine with raised bands, the compartments ruled and lettered in gilt, marbled paper on boards. One split to the fold-out plan of Nice, without any los, but generally this is very good indeed.

(8.3 x 5.6 inches). 12 copper engravings, including two fold outs that are a bit rubbed and creased but complete. Pages generally clean and free from marks. Contemporary tree calf boards with new tan calf spine. Raised bands, the compartments double ruled in gilt. Red title label, gilt. Some rubbing to the edges of the boards but overall a very good copy of this famous work.

Finely bound, by Frost & Co, of Bath, in half tan calf. Spine with five raised bands, each with gilt floral wavy role. Compartments decorated with double ruled borders. Within the borders are floral corner decorations and decorative centre pieces. Red and blue labels, ruled and lettered in gilt. Tan cloth on boards. Marbled endpapers. Top edge gilt. A fine copy in a highly attractive fine binding.

A very good copy of this famous work.

A very good set in the beautiful decorative Art Nouveau style red cloth bindings designed by Talwin Morris. Front boards with gilt, dark green and light green decorations. Spines with gilt lettering and decoration plus dark and light green blocking. Rear boards decorated in white and green. Bevelled edges to all boards. Plain grey endpapers. All edges gilt. Some rubbing to the edges and uniform fading to the cloth spines but the gilt and colours still strong and bright and this is a very attractive set in these beautiful bindings. --- This design, featuring attractive Glasgow Roses and Crowns, was exhibited at the influential Esposizione Internazionale d'Arte Decorativa Moderna in Turin in 1902.

Previous owners attractive armorial bookplate (Samuel Wells, Jun. of Huntingdon) to all of the front pastedown endpapers and neat hand written notes to the first 2 volume's front free endpapers. Overall a very god set.

Publishers dark blue cloth with gilt and black lettering and full illustration to the front board. Spine lettered in gilt. Rear board with blind stamped double rule border and publishers device to the centre. Brown coated endpapers. Inner front hinge cracked but still firm. Overall a near fine copy. --- A scarce and unusual book of Satyrical political verses with all the characters being pigs and set in Ham(p)shire. Copac lists just five physical copies of this first edition.
