Description:
New York: The Vanguard Press, 1938. Unlike the majority of Geisel's books, The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins was written in prose rather than rhyming and metered verse. Geisel, who collected hats, got the idea for the story on a commuter train from New York to New England, while he was sitting behind a businessman wearing a hat; the passenger was so stiff and formal that Geisel idly wondered what would happen if he took the man's hat and threw it out the window. Geisel concluded that the man was so "stuffy" that he would just grow a new one. The book received positive reviews from critics. The New York Times reviewer called the book "a lovely bit of tomfoolery which keeps up the suspense and surprise until the end." Booklist, which had criticized Geisel's previous book, And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, for containing only enough material for one comic strip, praised The 500 Hats as "a brand-new idea, developed into a complete tale, not too long,… Read More

London: MacMillan and Co, 1872. Octavo, two volumes, uniformly bound in full red morocco, all edges gilt, gilt titles and tooling to the spines, gilt ruled to the front and rear panels, raised bands, original cloth bindings tipped in to rear of each volume. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is an early printing. Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There is an early printing. Illustrated by John Tenniel, text illustrated. A very nice set. Alice's Adventures were "born on a golden afternoon" in July 1862, when the Rev. London: MacMillan and Co, 1879. Alice's Adventures were "born on a golden afternoon" in July 1862, when the Rev. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (better known as Lewis Carroll) took the three small daughters of Dean Liddell of Christ Church on a boating trip up the Isis. Carroll delighted the three children by relating Alice's adventures, and eventually promised his favorite among the three, Alice Liddell, to write the story down for her. Through the Looking-Glass can be seen as a mirror image of the Alice's Adventures. For example, the latter begins outdoors in the warmth of May 4 and uses the imagery of playing cards, while the former begins indoors on a snowy, cold November 4 and uses the imagery of chess.
