Description:
London: George G Harrop and Co. Ltd, 1933. Signed Limited Edition. Fine. A limited edition of 460 signed by Rackham. An inspired anthology drawn from "old favourites of the nursery...Most of them had a long and eventful life of oral tradition before somebody who could write caught them as they flew and consigned them to cold print" [Illustrator's Preface]. Classics by Hans Anderson such as "The Ugly Duckling" and "The Emperor's New Clothes" and Charles Perrault's "Cinderella" and "Puss in Boots" appear with tales from 'The Arabian Nights' and the traditional English folk tale "Jack and the Beanstalk" and Washington Irving's American classic "Rip van Winkle". Published near the end of his remarkable career, Rackham with characteristic rich earth-tones illustrates a mythical fairy world in this beautifully published edition. He is mindful of belonging to an ancient tradition of story-telling and notes "in our own day, inspired story-tellers go on adding original characters to the stock-an Alice, a…

Description:
Sydney: Angus & Robertson, 1933. First Edition. OUTHWAITE, Ida Rentoul. Rare first edition with original dust jacket. Verse and illustration by Ida Rentoul Outhwaite. A dramatic stylistic shift from her body of work up until this point, Ouhtwaite's "Bunch of Wild Flowers" follows in the tradition of Margaret Tarrant and Cicely Mary Baker's little books of poetry illustrated with "flower fairies." Small quarto, six tipped colour plates, line drawings; original decorated papered boards; endpapers foxed, head of spine a little browned, a fine copy nonetheless in a rubbed dust-jacket that has sustained some loss of the rear panel.

Description:
Melbourne: Melbourne Publishing Company, 1919. First Edition. First edition, with beautiful colour plates by the author. Gaze was one of the most prolific authors of books for children in this period, and this fantasy about the adventures of a small girl in a world where she meets people such as the Clerk of the Weather and the South Wind is one of his most popular works. Coppertop, and its sequel Coppertop Cruises (1920), were marvellous vehicles for Gaze's fine, opalescent-hued watercolours. The plates in these, and his other Australian-published works, 'established him as the most original illustrator of children's books after Ida Rentoul Outhwaite' (Holden, A Golden Age: Visions of Fantasy, p. 82). Born in New Zealand in 1885, a whimsical artist with outstanding talent, Harold Gaze is one of the more elusive Australasian children's writers and illustrators. We know little with exactitude about his life. After being rejected for active service, Gaze reputedly studied at various art schools in…

Description:
London and New York: Longmans, Green and Co, 1892. Limited first edition. Ford, H.J.. A handsome copy of the third of Lang's beautiful fairy books with illustrations by Henry J. Ford. The Scots author was an avid collector of fairy tales from around the world and many of the stories in this collection, particularly the classic French tales, are translated here into English for the first time. In the preface Lang writes, "The stories in all the books are borrowed from many countries; some are French, some German, some Russian, some Italian, some Scotish, some English, one Chinese. However much these nations differ about trifles, they all agree in liking fairy tales." One of the French stories collected in 'The Green Fairy Book' may have provided inspiration for J.R.R. Tolkien's 'The Hobbit' and 'Lord of the Rings'. Issued in the year of Tolkien's birth, we know that Tolkien had read the 'The Enchanted Ring' in Lang's 'Green Fairy Book'. Tolkien makes reference to the collection in his dissertation,…

London: Eragny Press, 1902. Pissaro, Lucien. With woodcut borders and initials by Lucien Pissaro and three wood-engravings by T. Sturge Moore. The Eragny Press was the private concern of Lucien Pissaro and his wife Esther, established with the assistance of Charles Shannon and Charles Ricketts of the Vale Press. Sturge Moore wrote on the books printed by Eragny: "If they are precious, honour them, be liberal for them. We must have fewer then; but those few shall be beautiful on the table, on the shelf, in the hand; while we muse on the meaning, the eye shall rest happily on the page where fair proportions have been sought and established between margin and text, between type and page."
