Description:
Mosman, N.S.W.: The Pump Press, 1978. Limited Edition. Fine. Number 55 of 80 copies. Fine press publication regarding the work of Beatrice Webb (1858 -1943) and Sidney Webb (1859 -1947), noted English Fabian Socialists who visited Australia in 1898 addressing the United Trades and Labour Council in Adelaide. "Mrs Webb... remarked that public opinion in Australia and in all the colonies was strangely backward on the subject of factory legistlation. It should be the business of all trade unionists to destroy the idea that unregulated individual bargaining was the best for the worker. It was the restriction of the hours of labour that guaranteed the personal freedom of those who had to work..." [Beatrice Webb, Adelaide, 1898.]. Octavo, original string-bound paper wrappers, 8 pages, 2 photographic portraits, a fine copy.

Description:
London: Cassell & Co, 1900. Small octavo, red cloth wrappers, in lovely original condition, some wear. With chapters on Australian meat and homemade wine. 'The age in which we live is essentially one of progress, and in no branch of the fine arts is progress more marked than in the art of cookery... The secret of good cooking is economy, in the highest sense of the word. The good cook will extract all the goodness and utilise all the materials at his or her disposal, whereas the inferior and bad cook, through ignorance, commit the crime of waste. We must remember that when we waste food, we in one sense rob the poor... The present work has been written on the basis of the maxim that economy and simplicity are not incompatible with excellence and elegance. We have also, in compiling it, borne in mind that there is an increasingly large class of persons who, without being vegetarians, consume a greater amount of vegetable and farinaceous food than was customary years back. Those persons will find…

Octavo, 11 plates (10 in colour), the colour plates bound as matched pairs with the upper plates featuring peek-a-boo windows to reveal the image beneath; shaken, but a fine copy in contemporary half green morocco, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt.

Description:
British Broadcasting Corporation, 1956. First Edition. Jean Seaton, official historian of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC): "[The Listener] was edited with a real eye, a testament to the power of the editor, intelligent and constructive and with a style driven by the urgency and topicality of the BBC, but about as real an insight into what the serious minds of the time were thinking about," she said. "At that time in the 1930s, The Listener was part of the immense ambition of the BBC to be part of British life, and early on established a tone more bohemian than the BBC." THE GUARDIAN, 2011 Collection includes "I Believe in China' by the Rev. H.B. Rattenbury (15 March, 1945); 'The Menace to Free Journalism in America' by Mary McCarthy (15 May, 1953); 'The Age of the Universe' by C.A. Coulson (21 May, 1953); 'The Use and Misuse of Science' by the Archbishop of York (25 February, 1954); 'Bernard Shaw: a Personal Memory' by Esmé Percy (26 May, 1955); 'What is American Conservatism?' by…

Description:
Melbourne & Sydney: Lothian Book Publishing Co, 1917. First Edition. Australian author, Tarella Quin (1877 -1934) began her literary career writing children's books in collaboration with the celebrated artist, Ida Rentoul Outhwaite. Quin published her first book with Outhwaite in 1910 - Gum Tree Brownie and Other Faerie Folk of the Never-Never - embarking later into the world of romantic outback fiction for adults. 'Nelia's beauty was spoilt by her mutinous discontent with a fate that had chosen to send them bad seasons when she was just at the age to burst from bush-girl chrysalis into a butterfly. It robbed her tilted mouth of gaity, and put storm into a pair of the most glorious grey-blue eyes that ever girl possessed.' (Chapter 1, Paying Guests ). Octavo, 311pages, bound in cloth boards, spine frayed at hinges, pages lightly browned, a good copy of an uncommon book.
