With a single annotation in manuscript ink on page 157, and several xerographically duplicated annotations on the final leaves. A tell-all about the exploits of David "The Duke" Monteverde, a burglar who stole thousands of dollars of goods from Hollywood's elite during the 1930s and 1940s. Co-author Robert F. Slatzer was best known as a director and screenwriter for films such as "The Hellcats" (1968), "Bigfoot" (1970), and "Mule Feathers" (1978), and as the author of the biography "The Life and Curious Death of Marilyn Monroe" (1974). Beige titled front wrapper, missing rear wrapper, with credits for authors David "The Duke" Monteverde and Robert F. Slatzer. Warmly INSCRIBED by Van Vechten on the front endpaper of the first volume to noted screenwriter Anita Loos: "For Anita with admiration and love from Carl / Christmas, 1955 / New York." Loos' ownership stamp on the front endpaper of each volume. Loos, a prolific and highly regarded screenwriter, has only now begun to have her influence on film be fully recognized. She has over 150 screenplays to her name, including "Red Headed Woman" and "The Women," and is considered to have been the first staff script writer, hired by D.W. Griffith's Triangle Film Corporation. A lovely association copy between two creative minds. Both volumes have just a hint of toning to the red cloth at the extremities, else Fine in a Fine slipcase.

Garden City: Doubleday, Doran, 1930. First Edition. First Edition. Born in England, David Betts drifted around the American West before coming to New York and finding work driving cabs. He was dubbed "The Taxi Philosopher" after publishing several letters featuring his views on life and in the "New York Evening Post" during the 1920s. Proletarian through and through, "I'm Lucky At That" is part memoir of Lett's transient working life and part homespun, epigrammatical advice, written in his rough, conversational dialect. Near Fine in a Very Good plus example of the rare dust jacket. Owner name and address stamp on the front pastedown. Bump to the upper rear board. Jacket is lightly toned, with a couple of short closed tears, and light chipping. Rare in jacket.

He has also written for popular television shows and national publications, has been visiting faculty at numerous institutions including the Iowa Writer's Workshop, and has received awards from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and others. "Tales of a Wayward Inn" is INSCRIBED by the book's dedicatee, Robert Davis, on the front endpaper: "This first edition of Tales of a Wayward Inn is forced upon Mrs. John Charles Thomas by her admirer / Bob Davis / Chesapeake Bay / On board motor yacht Masquerader / Oct. 28, 1938." The second volume is unsigned. Additionally laid into "Tales of a Wayward Inn" is an envelope containing a typed letter signed from Davis to Mrs. Thomas on the letterhead of the New York newspaper The Sun, dated November 2, 1938, introducing the book, cautioning Mrs. Thomas against sharing the book before its release on November 17, and discussing his recent trip to Baltimore, where he visited the Davis family to attend a vocal festival.
