Description:
Paris: Editions de la Sirene, 1921. First Edition. First Edition. Includes three original illustrations: two are primarily typographic layouts, one centered around Charlie Chaplin (each is lacking the applied paste-up elements, in the case of the Chaplin image, it lacks the photographic image that was pasted on and that appears in the finished illustration), and the third and most interesting is the original drawing for the illustration that appears on page 85, of three men. An seminal text on cinema, a reflection on then-current films by Epstein, one of the earliest and most important French critics. But just as importantly, a spectacular example of deco era typography and design by Claude Delbanne, utilizing elements of film culture, variations on posters, popular film culture, and Russian Constructivist design. Saddle stapled two-color wrappers, with illustrations laid in. A single tiny chip, else Near Fine.

Description:
N.p.: N.p., 1959. Hand tinted woodcut by Kurt Seligmann in 1959 as a Christmas card, titled "Moor," SIGNED and dated in pencil by Seligmann just below the image, and further INSCRIBED to Amos Vogel: "We loved your card - with Jean Durand! / Season's greetings / Arlette and Kurt." Kurt Leopold Seligmann (1900-1962) was a Swiss-American surrealist painter and engraver. He was known for his fantastic imagery of medieval troubadors and knights engaged in macabre rituals and inspired partially by the carnival held annually in his native Basel, Switzerland. Amos Vogel (1921-2012) was one of the most influential cineastes in New York City. He is best known for his bestselling book "Film as a Subversive Art" (1974) and as the founder of the New York City avantgarde cine-club Cinema 16 (1947-1963), where he was the first programmer to present films by Roman Polanski, John Cassavetes, Nagisa Oshima, Jacques Rivette and Alain Resnais as well as early and important screenings by American avant-gardists of the… Read More

Description:
N.p.: N.p., 1984. Collection of five sketches and one hand painted cel, executed by noted American animator Walter Lantz. The cel and four of the sketches show Woody Woodpecker, and one sketch shows Buzz Buzzard. Born in New Rochelle in 1899, Walter Lantz began working as an animator for film studios on the east coast at the age of 16. Moving to Hollywood in 1927, Lantz caught his first break as the director for the "Oswald the Lucky Rabbit" cartoon for Universal Studios. He created Woody Woodpecker for Universal in 1941, and the character became an overnight success, with his own series the same year. Initially voiced with manic aplomb by prolific voice actor Mel Blanc, the character would be voiced by Grace Stafford, Lantz's wife, starting in 1950, lending a friendlier quality to the character. Lantz received an honorary Academy Award in 1979, becoming the second animator (after Walt Disney) to receive the award. All materials measure 12.5 x 10.5 inches. Description:
N.p.: N.p., 1986. Two vintage product illustrations for toy racetracks made by German manufacturer Darda, both by illustrator Ken Zaruba, circa 1986. The two track illustrations presented here are variants on Darda's track sets, "Raketenbaum" (Rocket Car) (with an annotation on the overlay of "Rollercoaster Roadway"), and "Bahn mit Tankstille" (Track with Gas Station), both manufactured in 1986, each signed by the artist, one with a Zaruba Studio label on the overlay. Popular in Europe and the US during the 1980s and 1990s, the Darda motor was invented by Helmut Darda in 1970, and feature a unique pullback motor, winded by rolling the cars back and forth, which then propel the cars to speeds up to 30 mph, requiring no batteries or electricity. While the cars can be run on any surface, Darda designed brightly colored tracks for the vehicles, incorporating loops, jumps, curves, and crossovers, which can be combined to create elaborate circuits, which run both vertically and horizontally. Description:
Burbank, CA: Warner Brothers, 1972. Original maquette demonstrating an early poster design for the 1973 film, featuring a vintage silver gelatin photograph of the legendary streetlit scene of Father Merrin's first arrival to Georgetown in the film mounted to the poster. A minimal design, without the credits information seen in the completed original "purple style" poster variant, and with a proposed (but ultimately unrealized) release date of Christmas Day shown at the bottom margin. This maquette compares both to the "purple style" poster in its use of said purple text, but also to the original black and white "special poster" design both in size and compositional austerity. The "special poster" measured 25 x 19 inches, as opposed to the standard 27 x 41 inches for the one sheet, and stated nothing but the film's title and the stark photo of Father Merrin. Based on the 1971 novel by William Peter Blatty, and written for the screen by Blatty. One of the great genre films of the 1970s that… Read More

Description:
N.p.: N.p., 1979. Original artwork depicting exotic birds in a glorious psychedelic landscape, created by singer-songwriter Don Van Vliet, better known as Captain Beefheart. Signed "Van Vliet / 79" on the bottom left corner. From the collection of Beefheart guitarist Gary Lucas, for whom the painting was made. It was around 1979 that Van Vliet began to contribute artwork to the covers of two of his finest recordings-"Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller)" (1978) and "Doc at the Radar Station" (1980). Gary Lucas was the principal guitar player, along with Jeff Moris Tepper, in Beefheart's final configuration of the Magic Band, appearing prominently on Beefheart's last two recordings: the aforementioned "Doc at the Radar Station" (1980) and "Ice Cream for Crow" (1982). Lucas' solo guitar performances of "Flavor Bud Living" and "Evening Bell" on the respective recordings are singular in Beefheart's oeuvre. Lucas performed with Beefheart for five years, until Van Vliet retired to Trinidad, California to… Read More

Description:
N.p.: N.p., 1960. Vintage satin banner with hand-sewn lettering, by an unknown artist, made after Paul Krassner and John Francis Putnam's 1963 poster. Krassner created the "Fuck Communism" poster for sale through his satirical underground magazine "The Realist," with typography by longtime "Mad" magazine art director Putnam. In addition to publishing The Realist from 1958 to 2001, Krassner was a founder of the radical activist group the Youth International Party (The Yippies) and an early member of Ken Kesey's Merry Pranksters. In the words of occasional Realist contributor Kurt Vonnegut, "At the beginning of the 1960s, FUCK was believed to be so full of bad magic as to be unprintable. [...] By having FUCK and COMMUNISM fight it out in a single sentence, Krassner wasn't merely being funny as heck. He was demonstrating how preposterous it was for so many people to be responding to both words with such cockamamie Pavlovian fear and alarm." 36 x 14 inches. Near Fine.

Los Angeles: Columbia Broadcasting System [CBS], 1968. Original scenario artwork for the 1968 comedy television show. Set design sketch for the living room of Lucy's apartment, including the oft-pictured brick fireplace, and Lucy herself coming down the stairs. The third of Lucille Ball's television comedy sitcoms, following her famed "I Love Lucy" (1951-1957) and "The Lucy Show" (1962-1968). While "The Lucy Show" was very popular Ball chose to end it, and created "Here's Lucy" as a way for her children to act alongside her. In this third sitcom she played a widow with two teenagers, working at an employment agency, and the show touched upon current events such as civil rights, rock music, and the sexual revolution. Also uncommon for the time the show was filmed in front of a live audience, as Ball believed she performed better in their presence. "Here's Lucy" ran for six seasons. Artwork 28 x 11.5 inches, mounted on a 34 x 18.5 inches illustration board. Pen and white gouache on vellum. Very… Read More
