N.p.: N.p., 1938. Archive of 64 vintage photographs, including 53 matte-finish and eleven glossies, documenting reconstruction of the Panama Canal's Dock 15 in Balboa. Most photographs with technical captions and dates from the negative on the rectos. Additionally included with the photographs is a collection of four booklets, dated between 1919 and 1943, discussing various aspects of the canal's construction and improvements during that time, as well as an original shipping envelope addressed from the Panama Canal Metal Trades Council. With Europe on the verge of war in the early 1930s, the US government became increasingly concerned about its ability to move naval warships between oceans. The canal locks would be susceptible to bombing in the event of war, the canal defenses were deemed inadequate, and the locks already had difficulty accommodating large US battleships. With three pages of shooting schedule laid in and manuscript pencil annotations to the verso of the rear wrapper. America's wealthiest bachelor (Eddie Bracken) joins the Navy to escape his gold-digging suitors, only to be wooed by another (Veronica Lake). a cigarette girl at a club already engaged to his best friend (Sonny Tufts). Luckily another girl appears at the same club, a singer (Marjorie Reynolds), and the quartet of main characters sort things out via a series of comedic, if predictable, falterings. Based on the 1951 Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Herman Wouk. Shot, struck, and mounted by the film's still photographer, Bob Willoughby, with his ASMP rubber stamp on the verso. Full provenance available. After studying with Saul Bass at the Kann Institute of Art in Los Angeles, photographer Robert Willoughby began working for magazines such as "Life," "Look," and "Harper's Bazaar" in the late 1940s. He spent the next 20-plus years as a set photographer for every major studio and magazine, with his images seen in print literally every week of his career. Willoughby's photographs are in the permanent collections of ten museums, including The National Portrait Galleries in Washington, DC and London, the Bibliotheque Nationale de France, The Museum of Modern Art, and The Tate Modern. 10 x 8 inches, with uneven margins. Jerry Wald is best remembered for his long and successful association with Warner Brothers as both a screenwriter and producer of a number of notable films, including "Mildred Pierce" (1945), "Humoresque" (1946), "Key Largo" (1948), and "Flamingo Road" (1949). In the 1950s he moved to Twentieth Century-Fox, and was the producer there for "An Affair to Remember" (1957), "Peyton Place" (1957), and "Sons and Lovers" (1960). Based on the 1955 book, "Hellcats of the Sea," starring future president Ronald Reagan and his wife-to-be Nancy Davis in their only collaboration. Reagan stars as the commander of a WWII submarine, with Nancy as the onboard nurse. Culver City, CA: Columbia Pictures, 1973. Vintage studio still photograph from the 1973 film. Based on the 1970 novel by Darryl Ponicsan. Two foul-mouthed sailors are assigned a shore patrol to escort a young seaman to a Navy prison in Maine to begin a heavy-handed eight year sentence. The pair decides to take their captive out for a few adventures before his prison term, including getting drunk, skating in Rockefeller Center, going to a brothel, and more. Screenwriter Robert Towne faced difficulty adapting Ponicsan's novel for the screen, largely due to Columbia Studios' concern over the novel's profanity. The film eventually gained the dubious distinction of the most uses (65) of the word "fuck" in a motion picture at the time of its release. Set and shot on location in New Jersey, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine, New York, and Virginia in the US, and Ontario in Canada. 10 x 8 inches. Near Fine.

Universal City: Universal Pictures, 1964. Vintage banner poster from the 1964 film. Based on popular 1962-1966 ABC television sitcom, made during the series second season, and followed by the 1965 sequel, "McHale's Navy Joins the Air Force," also directed by series producer Edward Montagne. Remade in 1997, directed by Bryan Spicer, and starring Tom Arnold and David Alan Grier. In order to save a struggling orphanage, McHale and his crew recreate the Australian Derby on a South Pacific Island, and end up in even more debt to a group of Marines. 81 x 24 inches. Very Good plus, with light soiling and faint rubbing and creasing.
