Description:
Although perhaps a little age-darkened, this book is tight, intact, unbumped, unfrayed, and with no stains, dents or tears. With inscription from author to Prof. K.M. Setton (1914 - 1995) of the Institute for Advanced Study.Stephen George Chaconas (1912 - 2024) wrote a classic monograph on the intellectual phenomenon of Greek nationalism as embodied in Adamantios Koraïs, (1748 - 1833) the Smyrna-born Greek scholar and nationalist who was a major figure in the Greek Enlightenment.

330 pages, 165 tissue-protected illustrations, coated paper. The covering of the spine is partially detached, and there is some rubbing and bumping. The binding is tight, and all pages are intact and clean. Bears the bookplate of Kenneth M. Setton of the Princeton Institute for Advanced Study, and Vernon Watney (presumably Vernon James Watney of the famous brewery, and thus probably from his library at Cornbury Park in Oxfordshire).John Willis Clark (1833-1910), eminent Cambridge academic and polymath, wrote a groundbreaking study of the physical and technical characteristics of libraries from ancient times to about 1800, including the storage, care, protection, classification, regulation, retrieval, and provisions for the use of books, scrolls, documents, etc. The subject was, as he says in the preface, "entirely new" at the time.

King's College London seal gilt stamped on from cover, gilt dentelles inside edges of boards, three page edges gilt. Foldout in in fine condition. 367 pages.Robert Curzon Jr., 14th Baron Zouche (1810 - 1873) was a traveler, author, briefly a member of Parliament, and a collector, if not a connoisseur, of Biblical and other ancient manuscripts.
