Description:
Nuremberg; Anton Koberger, 1493., 1493. Original Nuremberg Chronicle leaf from the first (Latin) edition printed by Anton Koberger in Nuremberg, 1493. Folio (approx 15x12 inches) ; printed in 63 lines in gothic letter. Recto and verso decorated with several original woodcut illustrations of martyrs and saints. Minor worming to margin and light corner creasing, else fresh and clean. A very good example from the most noted book of the 15th century. The woodcut illustrations for this edition were executed by Michael Wolgemut, Willhelm Pleydemwurff and their workshop; Albrecht Durer, Koberger's godson, was apprenticed to Michael Wolgemut between 1486 and 1489 and it has been suggested by some scholars that he worked on the designs. The Latin edition appeared five months prior to a simultaneously planned edition in German.
