Pictorial soft cover with front and rear flaps in decorative blue edges around ancient sepia engravings in good but slightly worn and soiled condition, the text is in very good condition albeit on lightly tanned paper but devoid of all prior owner markings other than a small prior bookshop label from London adhered to the front flap The seventeenth century saw the production of many books of plant engravings, and of these the "Hortus Floridus I " of Crispin Van de Pass is generally acknowledged to be the masterpiece. This is a well produced but budget copy with appropriate descriptions and b/w illustrations on the facing page. Translated from the Latin by Spencer Savage and with a detailed and important introduction by Eleanor Sinclair Rohde.

There is a tiny prior owner name on top of front paste-down. The night in question is August 6th 1945, the end of the day on which the world's first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. At this time the author was in a Japanese prison camp in Java and this bombing in Japan had a profound and direct influence on his fate and that of his co-prisoners. This is a vivid and moving rendition of an extraordinary story by a highly respected and experienced author.

During the 1970's Dr Fritz Herrmann, a scholar living at Friedberg , Hassen in West Germany, came upon a publication on the most poisonous plants of Germany, published in 1943. One of its two parts was a portfolio of twenty four "absolutely enchanting" colour plates by an artist named Joseph Prestele operating out of a small print shop in Friedberg.
