Description:
Burma (Myanmar), nd [circa 19th cent.]. Very Good+. Kammavaca are among the most sacred of Burmese religious texts. Kammavaca (kammavaca in Pali) consist of nine Khandakas from the Pali Vinaya Pitaka, each of which relates to a specific ceremony associated with monks of the Theravada school of Buddhism. "Kammavaca are volumes of one, five, or nine extracts from the Theravadin Vinaya, each relating to specific ceremonies associated with monks. Noel F. Singer writes that the earliest kammavaca consisted of folios made of plain palm leaves, each of which had four lines of square-inked script on a gold or silver background." ("Kammavaca Texts: Their Covers and Binding Ribbons," Arts of Asia, 23, 1993) Each leaf holds six lines of Pali script written in square Burmese script in black magyi zi lacquer made from tamarind seed, between hatched (yazamat) borders. Each leaf is numbered in Burmese script. The leaves of this example have been fabricated from saffron-coloured textile - most probably the old…

Description:
New York; New Haven, CT: Limited Editions Club, Yale University Press, Printing Office, 1937. Limted Edition. Hardcover. Very Good+. Limted Edition. Hardcover. The Kasidah of Haji Abdu El-Yezdi (1880) is a long English language poem written by "Haji Abdu El-Yezdi," a pseudonym of the true author, Sir Richard Francis Burton (1821-1890), a well-known British Arabist and explorer. In a note to the reader, Burton claims to be the translator of the poem, to which he gives the English title "Lay of the Higher Law." It is thus a pseudotranslation, pretending to have had an original Persian text, which never existed. The Kasidah is essentially a distillation of Sufi thought in the poetic idiom of that mystical tradition; Burton had hoped to bring Sufist ideas to the West. Minimally sunned and toned, mildly starting, discoloration to endpapers, else tight, bright, unmarred. Bound in full lavender calf with gilt lettering on the spine and elaborate embossing on both covers. Printed on double folded Japanese…

London: Hogarth Press, 1927. Third Edition/First Thus. Hardcover. Near Fine in Fine Drop-Spine Archival Box. Third Edition/First Thus. Hardcover. Binding is housed in a clamshell box covered in sky blue buffalo skin and light blue Stonehenge paper. Leather spine embroidered with author's name in pale pink cotton floss. Trays covered in pale yellow handmade paper and lined with light grey Novasuede. Exquisitely bound in a manner and style reflecting Vanessa Bell's illustrations. First fully illustrated edition, hand-numbered by Virginia Woolf, this being number 48 of 500. This was a collaboration between author and artist which was deeply important to Woolf, who saw it as a means of "binding herself to her sister" (Willis, p31). "Bell's designs for this edition occur on every page of text, acting as borders, punctuation, bridges, or disruptions into the type-set text. In contrast, the first and second editions of 1919 only had a frontispiece and finispiece by Bell, and she was not satisfied with…

Toronto: Rumour Publications, 1978. Limited Edition. Original Wraps. Near Fine in Wraps. Limited Edition. Original Wraps. The imagery combines stencil text with photographic film 35mm negatives and 2x2" positive transparencies and other obvious paint brush manipulations. The various media form a collage resembling Dadaist and/or Kurt Schwitters constructivist collaged art works. Arguably, this loose assemblage of text and image mimics "artist magazine" concepts, but it also elicits "zine" like qualities because of the raw and grainy reproduced pages. The registration of the recto and verso stencil text is exceptional, in that, the text on the front lines up with the reversed text on the back without the use of contemporary registration. Littered throughout are self-portraits of Paul Robinson in negative and positive photographic forms composed with the text statements that dictate the action of the photograph, [example "Hang Me" text with an image of Robinson hanging from a noose.] The front page is…
