Description:
Hague: unknown, possibly London, 1803. First edition. First edition. Quarto. Half calf, vellum corners, marbled paper covered boards. Part I [all that was published]. 182pp, 6pp. postscript; "The Second Part of these Sketches, 12pp. Tall copy with wide margins, exceedingly scarce and precocious treatise on threat of Napoleon and the intricacies and strategies of war and how to avoid it, with special respect to Russia and also Great Britain. The author has remained unknown to this day, but from "The Edinburgh Review" of 1804 we have some inkling to his identity: "This is altogether a very singular work. The language is that of a foreigner pretty well acquainted with English, or of an Englishman who, by long residence abroad, has lost the free use of his native tongue." A most intriguing and exceedingly scarce volume on Napoleonic France, only one other copy located on the market. A superb copy with only light wear and discoloration to binding, near fine.

London: Printed for Benj. Tooke, 1697. First Edition. First Edition. Tall quarto ((12æx7Ω"). [4], 342, [14] pp. Early full calf with double filet gilt ruling to borders front and back covers, spine with six raised bands, re-backed with morocco label on second panel and with embossed titling. Replete with engravings depicting examples of medals, Numismata is recognized as one of the most important 17th-century books on numismatics, as well as authenticity parameters. Interestingly, the content of Evelyn's treatise, as opposed to the title, focuses primarily on medals alone. The book however is concerned with more than just a study of medals, including a rather tangential piece on human physiognomy and its…
